If you suspect that you have a flex problem, next time you have your primary cover off, just squeeze the upper and lower spans of the primary chain together with your hand and watch for the clutch to flex!:2thumbs:

DOGVET Can you tell us more why these mainshafts just break? Are the fractures from torsional load or shear? From a brittle, ductile,fatigue from shock? If its baker did the tranys go to them or did you do the failure analysis?This has been an ongoing unanswered question that gets posted as broke.:job:

I'm not aware of any failure analysis done on the shaft specifically, (at least before I got canned) the trannys were rebuilt in house at BDM (at one point they were overhauling 15 trannys a week). I did do some preliminary testing on a mainshaft installed in a tranny case without any gears on it and found that when the mainshaft is deflected at the clutch, it will deflect almost the same amount inside the case between the bearings. I'm certain that that would play hell with the gear mesh!

Clutch and tranny problems were to be high on my priority list after returning from surgery.

There are three known issues with the current tranny:
main shaft flex and failure
4th gear snap ring popping out
input bearing failure.

That's all I've got to say about that!

DogVet, thank you for that information. I will save this in my tech info. to be on the look out for.

In my limited experience which means none, would running an open primary be helpful or hurtful to these known issues you stated?

Dogvet When bdm rebuilt the tranys did they go back with the same bearing manufacture? Sounds like the trany mainshaft need longer bearing on each end to help with the flex.Please dont tell us the bearings came from china.

You would think on a open primary with a outside support would help the flex issue. Good question we all may have to buy open primarys, darn the luck:D

Wow! thats quite a problem.
Are you aware of any upgrades that might have been made to the 2008 trannies?

Or were they making any upgrades when they did the rebuilds?

I'm glad I just bought one of the BDM trannies on Ebay for a back up.

Ok guys, continuing to ask Dogvet questions if futile as he is no longer here.
He asked to be removed along with his wife after he though she was attached for some crazy crap she posted.

Bottom line though is this old thread is dead as far as Dogvet goes!!! :flag:
