clutch slipping

Good morning fellas, I have a clutch slipping problem in 4th, 5th and 6th gear. It happened monday coming back from Red River NM. My bike has about 5,800 miles, I used to put amosoil in the primary but change to not synthetic fluid about 1,000 miles ago because I was told that synthetic make the clutch slip (funny, never had a problem before).
Anyway I did some research and it look like that a loose clutch hub nut can be the cause, or it just need a clutch adjustment. My question is, (before I start messing around) anything else I should look or be the cause for a slipping clutch? With this kind of milage is it possible I'm gonna need a new clutch?
Thanks
Denny

I am not a expert by any means, but the clutch plates should be in good shape at this low mileage. The easy thing to check is the clutch adjustment since it only takes a few minutes to do. If that doesn't resolve the problem, then you can get more into it with the clutch hub nut.

Check the clutch adjustment, check the hub nut, check the clutch carrier to see if its cracked, and if all that is good you may have a input shaft bearing in the trans going bad.
Easy to check with the primary cover off.

Maybe Cav can give you the symptoms of the nut backing out. But, from here, it seems like you can ride the thing around, catch N, does not creep into the intersection, you hold the clutch in, and all that normal stuff a loose nut would sort of show. I'm not expert. I'm just taking a guess about that pressure plate sticking farther out, you have no lever action.

The question is... Have you beaten the bike up some? Come on, fess up. Someone said, 'this seems like too low in mileage for a clutch to go,' and I agree. A lot of syn are in low mileage bikes. I don't hear too many slipping issues. Unless you run some exotic slippery stuff?

What I don't understand is the fact it's not slipping in the lower gears 1st 2nd & 3rd where more torque is pushed through the clutch pack! I would have to rule clutch out and look closer at the baker transmission.

Everything work fine beside the slipping on higher gears, I don't do burn out or anything like that hopefully it just need an adjustment I hope that's it. I hope as Bobby said is not the shaft bearing in the transmission. Cavazos thanks for the help if I'm gonna need it I'll pm you.

well, thing about it is that adjusting the clutch don't cost you anything but time. do that first.

I had the same thing happening to my 08 model. Turned out to be my hub nut was loose. If you adjust the clutch and it goes slack stop riding the thing and tighten up your hub nut before you do damage to your primary cover... Just saying

Ok this afternoon or tomorrow I'll get to the clutch hub nut to see if that is the problem. I think I'm gonna get to the hub nut directly, I don't think I need to adjust the clutch because the clutch lever and the shifting is very smooth and working as it suppose to, also I can find the neutral very easy. So do you think this make sense? Should I get directly to the hub nut?

youll have to give the cable all the slack and loosen pushrod to take throwout bearing off to see if your hub nut is loose...i suppose you could also drop primary cover and try to wiggle and pull on clutch assemble...but if nut is just alittle loose it would be hard to tell..but in time youll know as no amount of adjustment in the cable will help and hopefully no real damage in the primary area or tranny will result...

Thanks Bill, I was just looking at my bike and I have my V&H radius pipe running in front of the clutch. Anyway if I drop the primary cover do I need a new gasket where is the best place to get one? Directly from baker? Do I need any other gasket?
Thanks

Usually you can reuse your primary cover gasket several times without it leakin...its an oring type give it a light coat of oil an b done....look at your manual as the torque specks can impact this.... good luck. Its easy......

i went ahead and got several o-rings from baker just in case. you never know what they will look like when you pull the outer (tears/cuts) so a good boy scout is always prepared.

hey to say it i just had exact problem and it wasnt any adjustment . it was the shaft in tranny. the bearings go bad and it allows the shaft to walk back and forth which mainly happens on higher gears.
