Clutch slippage MUST READ!

so my clutch on my 07 K9 has been slipping for awhile. I take it to KC Creations ( I know I am a dumbass) but I was trying to get them to cover it on a warranty since I only have 8300 miles on it. They will not even look at and try to take care of me. So I take it to Dyno Mikes. He builds the fastest street legal harleys around. He takes it apart and the plates are worn smooth but they are not burned or warped. So he calls the MFG of the clutch and they tell him it is a common problem. They said the clutch spring is too weak for the torque our big dogs put out. They recommend new kevlar plates and going with the medium spring instead of the factory spring. I will be getting it put on Monday and let you all know how it works.

By the way Dyno Mike sandblasted my old plates and put them back on for free and no slippage. Guess that would be too much for KC Creations to do for a customer who spends a lot of money at there place!! :job:

I think that mine is slipping. Like to know how that new spring works for you

and when you say plates are you talking pressure plate, steels or frictions?

Mine slipped only when I get on it pretty hard. It was just now and then at first then it became everyday. Staying out of the throttle I was ok. I will let you all know on Monday. It is going to cost just under $300 and that is installed!

Not sure if anyone else has had the problem you indicated. Actually after reading the part about the clutch, I went and looked and my warranty section on my 05 fully expecting it to say clutch was not covered. To my surprise it didn't indicate such but did mention the cable. Not sure if it the same for the 2007 or not.

That said, if it had been slipping for awhile, how many miles did you ride it after it slipped before taking it in? Not sure of your situation but if it is slipping and you continue to ride with slippage without doing the occasional adjustment, it will accelerate the wear.

The adjustment is something that is easy to adjust by the owner and normally takes more time to gather the tools than to do the adjustment. There is some very good info and how to post on here that will help.

Also in my O&M is is recommended that it be checked, calbes lube and lube of rod every 2500 miles or about the same frequency of oil and filter change.

Do not get me wrong, I am not trying to defend KC Creations for it is far from that, but it sounds like you may have helped wear the plates out quicker if you rode it for a while knowing it slipped.

Also there is many factors that could help contribute to accelerated wear such as dirty primary fluid or inproper type, abuse (burn out, bad hard shifts, excessive Rev Hits, etc.). None of these may apply to you, all I can say is for mine, I have 16000 miles on it with no problems on the original clutch. Basic stock (just pipes, cams, air filter changed) and keep the hard use to minimal to none. That and keeping on on my maintenance as suggested in O & M and fully expect many more miles out of it.

That and it is an 05, maybe the supplier was changed for 07 that may have a factor.

I kept my adjustments up on it. I put about 300 miles on it when it first started slipping. I took it to KC creations and they even adjusted it for me. I did use the recommended fluids.

I do have a ? about the adjustments. They kept the clutch pretty tight with no play at all in it. I thought there was suppose to be about a 1/4 play on those?

It's just the fact they did not even take the cover off and look. When I took it to Dyno Mike's he at least took the cover off and tried to do something for me to keep me rolling until I get my new clutch. To me that is customer service.

It's just endless with KC. Unbelievable.

Anyway, keep us all posted on the clutch and post what parts were replaced so we can reference back to this thread later. I'm sure you're not the only one that is going to have issues, especially since we all hop ours up to make them GO! Glad you've found a good shop. I'd call Big Dog also and let them know what's going on, I think you'd be pleasantly surprised.

O.k., I have to asks, what are the symptoms of it slipping...I find its a little hard to get it into gear at times, and for the first time the other day I was on a turn, pulled in the clutch and heard a grinding noise...thanks for all feed back.

Dyno Mike is not a certified BDM service center. He has built the only street legal harley that ran a 8.4 without a wheelie bar. He also holds the record for they fastest bike on the salt flats.

The symptoms I had is when i got on the throttle it felt like I just pulled the clutch in and I went no where. I let go of the throttle and then gave it some just a little and it started to grab again.

The weird part was there was no warping of the plates or burn marks. They just wore smooth which caused the slipping. That is what the MFG of the clutch stated was a common problem for the big dogs.

Hi Dimentia ... what made you choose the kevlar clutch? Did you look at other clutchs? I'm about ready to change mine out too ... some say that the BDM clutch carrier is not really that good ... my pushrod is out of wack and there's alot of gray matter in my primary fluid ... thanks and let us know how it works out for you. :up: :D And I agree .... you got great customer service at Dyno Mikes.

How many miles do you have on your K9? I have almost 6k on mine and haven't had any problems. No Hole shots or burn outs but not driving miss daisey either:)

First off I'm with Pro on KC FUCKTATIONS!

Second, why don't you call BDM directly. If its a known problem they may cover it for you. Then all you would have to do is put in a stronger pressure plate.

Sounds like your transmission is fucked:job: , quick take it to Rockstar. Dont want you breaking down on the road.
All you got to do is ask and we will all give you feedback...your welcome :roll:

Does sound like you have done what you need, not sure why the excessive wear, but good thing is that you have someone that seems to be getting you down the right road. Good luck

Seems to me if KC represents Bd and they had the correct free play correct primary oil in your bike correct diaphragm. Then the draining of the primary oil would have drew a flag.:job: Fibersnake is all over it.:2thumbs:
