Yours was built in the first part of 2006, so it's very likely you have an old main shaft inside of the transmission. Can you put the bike in any gear and still push it around like it's in neutral? If you can, then the Main shaft is broke and the transmission will have to be rebuilt.
Let me know, I have all parts in stock...

That big [clutch outer] basket is direct drive to the engine. The smaller [clutch inner] basket, drives the back wheel and that too is direct drive. The push rod slides thru the main shaft. The main shaft slides thru the inside of a gear. The splined part of the gear will sit outside of the transmission for the counter shaft sprocket.
The friction plates are the engine side, the steels, the wheel side. The pressure plate collects both packs of frictions and steels, locks them down via the springs. You are now direct drive from engine to rear wheel. You pull the lever in, the rod pushes away the pressure plate, lets the main shaft keep spinning, disengages the clutch center that is direct drive to the back wheel.

If you have any small access door on the
clutch side, remove that cover, pull the clutch lever in, then push the whole clutch outer basket assembly towards the transmission. That will be the pressure plate you'll be pushing on to notice movement. If the basket moves, your hand starts to move at the lever and it pushes the clutch lever out... "SHADING!"

Call bigdog... "Parts in stock."

When my clutch basket grenaded,it blew up instantly,NO sound...and NO clutch...bike was just sitting in my shop at a idle...it sheared off all the bolts to the basket....

Great explanation of how the clutch all works Sven....Thats good info for Hayseed...

Variable 5.

Thanks, DD

Hayseed can answer all variables and more, if he tears down and figures out who it is?

Left Side = Way too many expensive variables here that my be taken out.
Right Side = The ramp system is the cheaper side.
Center Case = That failure known out in the field with the shaft torn off.
Cable = Either end or snapped in between?

Your fastest chase is lean the bike over to the right and roll it some. That should upset the basket weight, bring the broken part back onto the main shaft, the clutch lever pops up by itself = $$$

I have an 06 K9. Is the broken main shaft something I can count on happening. If it is a good posibility I will have it replaced prior to failure on the road. I have 18,000 on the current build and it hasn't broke yet. What do you think? Thanks

Send me the numbers off the case and I can tell you when it was built.
With 18k miles, the bearings could use an update anyhow.

Unfortunately they were still using earlier parts for some of the early model 07's
But, be thankful it broke the way it did and not how some of the others have. I have had a few guys tell of how the transmission locked up on them while going 65 + mph and the rear wheel locks up like your putting the rear brake on. Amazing the ones I have talked to that were able to keep it upright.
When you get it back, it will be better than new :2thumbs:
