Clutch Problem

Good Eveing, I have a 07 K9 and i am having problems with the clutch. What I am experiencing is the previous owner put a spring in to make the lever easier to pull for him but what he didnt realize is that at high speeds (70 to 80) you crank it and it slips. So my guy ordered new springs, put them in and now its not slipping but its not disengaging properly. we tried to adjust the clutch by the frame and that helped untill the clutch got hot and then started slipping. need help leaving for a trip tomorrow and my guys is stumped and said that he is affraid that since its getting hot that it might through out my main bearing. Has anybody experienced this problem and whats the fix? Thanks for all who reads and helps.

Sounds like your clutch might be fried if you can't adjust it. Get a bandit as most members have went to that one and like it

the bike only has 5k on it, when he opened it up all looked good except this on plate or spring he wasnt sure about. The previous clutch was fine untill you where 70 to 80 running down the highway and you goosed it and it would slip. Put new springs in from Baker and now no slipping but at a light it still wants to move a bit. adjusted it and seemed fine then road tested it and when it got hot started slipping.

I am curious, when you say the previous owner put a different spring in it to make it pull easier; are you sure about that? Maybe he really put in the new style ball ramp and left the original 12 plate clutch pack?

It sounds to me your tolerances could be out of spec making it difficult or impossible to adjust properly finding the balance between slip and drag.

If the original clutch stack is in there and someone changed to a weaker pressure plate/spring reducing holding force, it's possible to have caused premature clutch failure - right.

So, do you really have a different non-stock spring or did you at one time? Or do you have the new ball ramp with non-spec'd clutch stack? (Yes, I know if tolerance is right - that could work too)

Sounds like Jim has a little clutch experience but I have no idea what he's talking about. Never had clutch issues.....knock on wood. Is there any way to go back to stock and start from scratch?

I do have some clutch experience, happy to have switched to a Bandit to make them go away....:D
I've never heard of someone changing to weaker spring as a means to make an easier to pull clutch, as that would reduce holding power of the stock clutch pack - which isn't stellar to start with right. As I understand it, the preferred method to make an easier pull clutch was to change the ball ramp design coupled with a 9 stack clutch pack (to match tolerance/spec's of the now available clutch rod travel - essentially)
I've read where others seemingly have had success in using the new ball ramp design with the original 12 pack stack, but again tolerances need to work out right - I couldn't confirm from personal experience.
Personally, I wouldn't be screwing around with different rate spring; maybe pressure plate thickness - but that's another issue too.
Right now, I'm just trying to understand what he really has in place today:

Stock or not and go from there right, what truly isn't stock? (suspecting someone is confused is all) Also assuming whoever is trying to adjust knows what their doing of course and all the basics above check out as well. (Carrier, nut etc...)

If you need a new clutch and backet I have a used one with about 1000 miles on it. I replaced the primary with Karata and have it just laying around.

Mine started to slip a little, I adjusted it per the maniual, put in B&M Trick Shift in the primary and has not slipped since.
