clutch nut

i figured an impact wrench would be able to get the clutch nut off. the lil bugger wont budge. do I also need a torch to get this sucker off? And yes, i know it's reverse thread :D

Is the nut coming off the shaft from the engine also reverse thread?

Take a torch to it to bring the temp up--the nut expands faster that the shaft. Even then, be ready to cut it off -- had to do that during my tranny rebuild.

Cross cut off two opposing corners and she'll come right off!

What size impact are hitting it with?
You can throw a shop rag in the primary chain which will lock it up as it rolls into the gear and use a big breaker bar with the socket to break it free some "clutch nut" and let the impact do the rest...
Yes the clutch nut is left hand and the primary is a right hand thread as said above.

Once again thanks for the info/advice/tips everyone

fyi- I believe the the impact wrench does 400 ft.-lbs.

I went out and got a torch and that did the trick. Both the clutch nut and the engine sprocket nut came off just fine.

After I removed the entire clutch assembly I noticed a slow and steady stream of transmission fluid leaking into the primary case from the transmission shaft. I think that's normal. I put the clutch basket back in for now to keep it from leaking more.

My open primary won't get here until sometime tuesday.. Should I drain the tranny fluid and get a bottle of redline pepto and refill after installing the new primary? Or will there still be enough tranny fluid left if I just let it leak out until it stops

The leaking with no clutch basket is normal

I think its due to lack of pressure on the seal.

You're already this far... could just drain it

Yeah, might as well I guess. I have to run up to SLC to get the pepto.. it's not as fun doing that in a car

gas, I think your pic answered my next question. :whoop: I was going to ask about those bolts in the primary with flap to keep them from backing out. Looks like I use a hammer + flat head to get the flap out of the way? :2thumbs:

I'm taking a half day off from work on tuesday to get the primary slapped on. Weather will be good by wednesday and I'll go for a quick 100mi spin around utah lake for good measure

Man, I'm glad you got good weather. I'm socked in with rain here but easing up to 30% on Thursday so that is when I will "hi-tail" it out of Dodge! Should be in SLC no later than 6pm if all goes well.

Just my 2cents worth like they say, but you might want to go ahead and get that seal while your in there, won't be a better time than now. Seals get hard and brittle over time with the heat and don't cost that much usually.
