Clutch F'd up!

I have an '07 Mastiff with the std baker 6 speed. The clutch cable appears to be ok, but it won't work. I have pulled the adjustment cover on the belt side and the jam nut is still there and tight, believe the last mechanic put it on with red lock tight. On the primary side the basket pushes out when the clutch lever is pulled, but still nothing. I'm ok with this stuff, and love to do all my own maintennance, but I must admit, this one has me stumped.

Looking at the primary side and the clutch basket assembly, I don't even see a hub nut!!! The shaft isn't even threaded. Now what. FML! STill doing research. I'll post any findings.

ok, first off, let's hope the mechanic didn't use any kind of loctite. go to the down tube to the clutch cable. there will be a rubber accordion boot that you need to move off the adjuster, either up or down, doesn't matter. back the jamb nut off the adjuster and release all pressure off the cable. then go to the clutch actuator cover on the right side of the bike and remove the cover. (it can be rather difficult) inside, you will find where the clutch push rod is located with the 11/16 jamb nut. this is where you will start the adjusting procedure. insert the (i think) 5/16 allen wrench in the end of the rod and turn the nut counter-clockwise. good luck.

You say the clutch basket moves out, so I'm assuming you have the primary cover off, yes/no??? Is the whole basket moving? meaning, can you see the primary chain move or flex when you pull the clutch in? If it does the clutch hub nut is loose. The nut is in behind the throw out bearing, remove the 4 hex head bolts and pressure plate and you will see the hub nut. Remove nut completely and clean the threads and shaft threads, apply red loctite. plenty of topics on this, do a search on clutch nut.

Do yourself a favor and do an intro!

Take a photo. What is with this missing clutch hub nut? How can the bike all this time: been ridden and now we have what?

What is with this clutch basket moving out? You would think the missing nut would keep the basket right there and the clutch lever stuck there at the grip too.

But it sounds like you are saying you can see the big basket move and come back, correct? And that means the lever moves back when you let go of the clutch lever. But you are not mentioning the lever sits there on its own, no nut, and the basket moves back in place... :confused:

Now, if this is how I think the clutch basket rides on that shovelicious kind of roller system; in a cage; and that cage wraps around the clutch center; and the clutch outer slides; as if it's going to come off? Normal. Because now we are back to you having a lever to pull the basket back and forth with.

We on the same page? Where are the photos?

Thanks for the quick response everyone. Now to clarify. when the lever is pulled the interior of the basket moves out and then returns to normal. the lever as well. the diagram for the manual has the hub nut on the outside, but all i see is bearings. Thanks to BWG56 for clarifying that it is behind the throwout bearing. The jam nut IS frozen to the push rod, probably locktite. FML. will deal with that later, i will follow up with some photos tonight after i get into it again. To many beers last night in my cramped garage, called it quits.

Since I just learned a lot on taking my clutch apart from help from this forum, from what you are describing, your clutch hub nut is loose-your diaphragm still moves in and out on the primary side, but the clutch just isn't engaging......needs to be tightened and then the clutch adjusted....two ways to get to it, you can pull the retaining clip on the throwout bearing and take the bearing off, OR you can loosen the 4 bolts you see on the diaphragm and take that off-careful the clutch pack doesn't fall out like mine did doing it that way...either way, you will probably have to re-adjust your clutch....but once you see the clutch hub nut, you will see if it's back off....here's a link to another post with a good picture of what a loose clutch hub nut looks like..this shows the picture with the diaphragm (4 bolts) removed.....
