Clutch Fade: 3 pulls; 1/8, 3/8, 3/4, then full slack, blew apart bearing

Was pulling out from a dead stop, clutch in, everything fine.
Released clutch and it felt wierd, like "clutch cable frayed" or was going bad...

Second clutch pull and release, cable felt way too much slack,
Third time a charm! -- knew it was gone; something broke!

Somehow made it home in 3rd gear on the freeway and traffic lights 7 miles -- perfect timing -- no stops, except last 1/4 mile up hill push home (shit!).

Thought it was the Clutch Cable on my 2004 Chopper. Removed cable all ok.

Checked Clutch Pack thru derby cover -- all ok.

Pulled 'clutch cable cover plate' at tranny -- OMG!

Photos show clutch "throw out" bearing blew apart and pieces all over!
Carefullly picked out every piece and metal fragment I could find.
Went to the Harley Dealer, looked at their parts diagram and realized what happened: lost the bearings, bearing holder and clip.

Lucky Bastard!
All broken parts accounted for in the 'clutch cable cover plate'
9 needle bearings, 1 clip and fragments of bearing holder, see photos.

Hope this never happens to you...

Look carefully at the left side shaft: notice near the end of the center rod it has no bearings between the two round disk spacers and the retainer clip is missing, compare to next photo.

New parts installed: 2 Spacers, bearings and holder, retainer clip.

The bad parts:

PS: Thanks "Kaptin Amerika" for quick response and sending me a clutch cable. I will keep it on hand in case I need it someday... :flag:

Great write up. I just hope my 04 stays together.
Yeah,
I wanna keep mine forever...
Good enough for me, still turns heads and gets the vaginas wet faster...
paid off and worth more to me than buying a new one (any bike)!

Although a little scarey on Big Dog parts...
but OK so far, since most of the parts that broke on mine are "Harley" or very similar... :)

FWIW, Baker has an upgraded throwout kit for the 04's at least. Not sure about newer models. Mine took a dump and they got me the fix. No problems since.

Hi HMAN,
We would like to hear and see more about it!
Any photos or additional vendor info?

Is it better than the stock or "Harley" version?

Looking forward to retirement
