Chrome Scratches

Ok, it's probably in the archives; but, I can't find it! I got a pretty good polish routine going for all of the aluminum and I have a good cleaner and light wax coating for the chrome; but, I've got some scratches in the chrome that I don't know how to get out. I'm not talking about the real fine stuff that you can only see if you hold your head right; but, scratches slightly bigger than those that you can see no matter how you hold your head. Is there any way to get them out without making things worse???

If they really bug you, you'll either have to replace the part with a new chromed one or have the part re-chromed during the off-season, as previously stated. I personally touch chrome as little as possible and when I do, I never use paste polishes as they tend to crystallize over time and the little crystals act like just like grit:eek: :bang:, doing more harm than good on show chrome. Use a clean micro-fiber towel or Harley Softcloth with a spray cleaner, liquid detailer mist or glass cleaner w/o ammonia on your show chrome. :up:

Devon shine

Not sure if you have "big" scratches" as the only answer I know for that is re-chrome. But when I haved the light scratches on the aluminum a buddy gave me a bottle of "Devon" shine. It is absolutely amazing. He uses it on all his show cars.
Its like a liquid. Shake well, apply and continue to rub until you see it turn black. Then use separate soft cloth and rub until high shine. It makes my alunimum look like chrome.

My only problem here is I dont know where to get more. Its a grey tube bottle and probably can find it online.

S100 is a great spray polish also.

lots of discussion in the past about what to use on aluminum, but what was being talked about here was actual chrome. ain't nothin' gonna help them scratches.

Nothing Googles up on "devon shine" or any derivative of it.

OK GUYS MAY NOT WORK BUT WORTH A SHOT GO TO PARTS HOUSE AND BUY TURTLE WAX FOR CHROME. IT REMOVED SOME LIGHT SURFACE SCRATCHS FROM SOME OF MY CHROME PARTS.....:2thumbs:

Turtle Wax Chrome Polish is pretty good stuff, shines it up nice, but with scratches you're pretty much screwed. "Devon" is Aluminum polish for billet parts, not for chrome. As far as cleaning chrome, I've also had great luck with Eagle One wadding polish they sell at Auto Zone. Stuff sucks for billet, but works great on chrome for getting off grease and bugs and doesn't scratch.

If it's not feasible to replace the scratched part, then a detailing website I look at occasionally suggests jeweler's rouge on a felt bob - go slowly, and you might be able to polish out hairline scratches or minimize them somewhat. The thing to remember is chrome is very hard and very thin, so go easy or risk worsening the damage.

Update...if it's a hairline scratch, not deep nor dented into the chrome, there is some hope...

I wiped the area down with detailer mist and clean micro-fiber towel, then polished it with Victory Chrome Polish, then went over it again with Turtle Wax Chrome polish (a little thicker than Victory's), and voila...scratches gone and chrome shines and looks like a mirror!:2thumbs:
