My guess would be some jackass was pissed because of where the chopper was parked and either flicked a cigarette or a match on the bike. Be great to see the video from the store prior to it going up in flames.

That sucks really bad for the owner. These engines get pretty damn hot so I wouldn't go blaming an individual. Just reminds me to keep all gas/oil/grease away from the outside of the bike...or any other flammable materials for that matter.

Hope the owner gets a replacement via insurance quickly.

WOW  - must've had a full tank of gas!

Would be interesting to find out what caused it!??..:loony:

My guess would be a ruptured fuel line/leak or electrical issue. Wires run under the tank. One good short and ignite some fumes. Kaboom! I replaced my rubber fuel line with stainless. I noticed a good wear spot in the fuel line from rubbing against the cylinder from years of rubbing against it

Looking forward to retirement
I know what I am going to do Saturday afternoon. Examine or replace the fuel lines!

Freequent cause of leaks on carberated models is float sticking when bike is leaning while parked and petcock turned on. However, gas will not ignite by heat alone unless spark ignites fumes. At any rate, it sucks when your bike blows up!

If I remember my chemistry, gas has an ignition temp of 500+ Farenheit when mixed with air. I highly doubt that fire broke out do to a hot motor. And if gas was leaking it would have to reach that temp before igniting.

Once you have a leak, all it takes is a spark from anything and it could ignite. Even a lit cigarette on the ground and some fuel from the over flow tube could set that off
