Check your EHC connections

Ok so it must be that time of the year? Maybe just reaching that 3yr aged bike marker? Long winter?

It's only mid may and I have diagnosed and been spot on 5 for 5 in the past couple weeks.

Dry, crusty, or water wet EHC connections causing rolling dead bikes or completely lit EHC fault lights. Stunned dog.

If they're wet dry them out and refill with dielectric grease. The grease dispurses water and ensures a proper connection on the pins. As long as they are filled with grease water won't get in there.

If they have crusty old dielectric grease, remove some of the crusty without tampering with the pins too much. They are delicate. Then... you guessed it refill with dielectric grease.

If they is very little dielectric grease, simply repack.

When I say pack with dielectric I mean fill both the EHC and wiring harness sides with the dielectric grease. It should oooz out a bit when you re-insert the wiring harness. Wipe up excess and you're GTG.

A EHC sample with the wires harnesses plugged in.

Here's a example of some crusty red stuff that BDM used

But remember to pack both sides. Then snug up the 4 set screws (2 each harness). If you have a broken screw or tab, no big deal, simply zip tie over the harness and under the ehc. That will keep it snug.

This may be a good idea to just check now, before it catches you on the side of the road.

Right on Gas just did mine.
If you break a screw though don't go cheap. Find an old video or parallel printer cable, cut the side out and pull the screw loose. Take your Dremel knock a little off, if its the screw on the cable entrance side otherwise leave it long it makes it easier to get at with a screwdriver, and cut a flat head slot in it. Take the four little screws loose on the side of the harness connector pull out the broken screw and pop in the new screw. You might have to enlarge the top hole in the connector cover a little but it works great and it looks way more professional. Of course if the screw broke off down inside the nut on the EHC you will have to replace the nut also but again not a problem. If you don't have any old computer parts layin around you can go down to your local surplus dealer and pick a couple up for a buck or two. When you change the nut though you will have to crack the epoxy seal around it so make sure you either replace the epoxy, which I strongly recommend, or apply liberal dielectric around it.

Wha.....huh......oh....uhm....yeah when I did it this time I broke a screw so I should have just been more delicate with it but you know how it goes right?

Sorry Gas didn't mean to jack your thread juz sayin

My Dog shut off on me during a ride today for the first time. Thankfully, it started back up. I will be checkin' my connections for sure!

No problem Gents.

Kapt... that is the best bet. But not everybody is that adept to fixing such things. The zip tie WILL work. Could even double up for that added security. You're fix is better but the zip tie is fast and easy. If for nothing else, till they can try your better fix.

As you boys can tell. Dave was my 5th of 5.

Vegas... that is the best bet. I really should include this on the dogs I work on. It's so vital!!

Orion... a dry socket isn't good when you get a tooth pulled, in a hooker and/or still the same case here.

Maybe I should do a "How To"?
What do you guys think? Should I do a how to on fixing your broken EHC parallel connector mount screw? If enough people want it I will be happy to do it.
