Charging Issues

I have a 01 Husky. We have been having issues with the battery draining and going dead.

I have recently just replaced the stator and checked the voltage. It is working properly now.

According to the Big Dog Manual we should be getting around 12.8 volts to the battery at idle at 1000 rpms. We are only getting around 12.5 volts, not a big deal. The issue we are having is that according to the Big Dog Manual as the rpms increase the voltage to the battery should increase to around 13 to 14 volts at 3500 rpms. The voltage on the battery remains constant at 12.5 volts.

We have checked the battery to make sure there is nothing pulling on it while the bike is not running. It came back ok.

We thought it might be the regulator. We have tested it to make sure it has resistance and it did.

Any ideas?

Not sure where you are reading 12.5 at Idle? And higher with more RPM? It should be 13.8 - 14.4 as soon as your bike is on regardless of RPM.

Sounds like your bike is not evening charging the battery its only pulling and draining from it.

Check for voltage regulator ground. From the regulator case to the battery ground if you get >0.5 Ohms most likely you got a bad VR. Let us know what you get!

I checked it with out the bike running. I had it set on 200 ohms on the volt meter. I checked it from voltage regulator to battery ground. It came back with a 3.2 reading.

I also checked with the bike running and it came back with a 5.1 reading.

Not being a mechanic but I assume this means the regulator is bad.

Yes infamus is saying the regulaotr might be bad. Should be getting 14.2 or better at idle. Also check your battery ground to make sure it is tight and clean. And does your bike have a fuse or circuit breaker coming back from the the VR to the battery? If blown or tripped you will not get a charge back from the VR/stator. May want to chase the wire from the VR abck to the battery and check it.

It was a bad regulator and stator. A local mechanic gave me a piece that will go over the stator plug and connects to a bolt on the motor to secure it. It holds the regulator plug in place.

He explained that if the regulator plug rattles loose just enough to cause it to ground out it will cause you to have a bad regulator and stator.
