It's raining, so now is a good time to pull some maintenance. I want to change my ear brake pads and need some help..!! Can I change these pads without pulling the caliper?? Is it possible to just pull out the pin on top of the caliper and swap the pads??

Nope. Have to pull the calipers Hip -- but it's wicked simple. Pull the two bolts holding the caliper into the mount - slide the retaining pin (one with the spring) out and replace the pads. Probably have to press the pistons back a bit (new pads are thicker) but you can do that with a wedge.

Nothing you can't handle Hippy!

I leave the old pads in and use a big screwdriver to pry the pistons back in as evenly as possible and then I put the new pads in.

How did it go Hippy?
Hey Mikie....All went surprisingly good. I went ahead and took the caliper off and cleaned everything up really good. And I changed them not a mile too soon. One had already gone to the metal backing pad while the other was thin as paper. Rotor looked and felt OK. Not near as bad as I thought it was going to be.!! Thanks to all who gave some really good advice...!! I won't ever wait that long again to change them. I changed the front over the winter.

One more question

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hardest part changing these pads was taking the damn top off the master cylinder to add fluid for bleeding the system. Anybody know an easier way, a different tool....something?? My old stiff fingers had one hell of a time getting the back screw, one closest to the frame...in and out.!! All I had that would work is a small allen wrench, bent in a 90. If I had the exhaust pipes off, it would be a piece of cake. Also, I noticed some dampness behind the rubber boot on the front of the master cylinder, where the pushrod goes into the cylinder. Can this be fixed by rebuilding or something of the sort??? Brake fluid was at an allowable level when I finally got that damn top off, so it doesn't seem to be causing a problem....yet..!! And yes to all that might ask, I used DOT 5, silicone brake fluid.!!!
When, I gotta get me a beer and soak these sore fingers..!!!
approx after how many miles do you change the pads. I realize this depends on driving style and urban vs suburban driving.
