Ok, I have been pondering changing to synthetic oil from the regular oil
(Revtec)I have been useing in the scooter. I see lots of you use synthetic and give it good reports for the S&S motor.
I have always heard if you ever change from regular oil to synthetic you can never ever go back to regular oil.
Is that really true????

Alot of people here use Amsoil or Mobile 1....

From Valvoline Website.......

4.Is it ok to switch back and forth between regular and synthetic motor oil? I heard this causes leaks? Is this true?

Switching between synthetic and conventional oil does not cause problems. Because the oils are compatible, you can switch back and forth as often as you like.

From Mobile 1 website..

Switching From Conventional Motor Oil to Mobil 1
There seems to be confusion about how to make the switch from conventional motor to synthetic. I am a do-it-yourselfer. Could you provide instructions?

Answer:
The instructions are very easy to follow: Simply change the oil as you would normally. Any “confusion” is just myth. You can switch from conventional motor oil to Mobil 1 synthetic (and back again, if you want), without following any special procedures.

The only exception to this is with a higher-mileage engine that has never used synthetic motor oil, or with an engine that has used conventional motor oil and been poorly maintained. In these cases, you should still follow the same basic oil-change procedures (drain the old oil, remove the old oil filter, put in new Mobil 1 and put on a new oil filter), but you should follow a regimen of one or two shortened oil-change intervals. For instance, let’s say that your regular oil change interval is 5,000 miles. If you’re switching to Mobil 1 under the circumstances mentioned above, make your next Mobil 1 oil change in 2,500 miles, your third Mobil 1 oil change 3,500 miles after that, and then follow your normal 5,000 mile oil-change interval. The reasoning behind this staggered interval is that a high-mileage engine, or one that has seen infrequent oil changes, will likely have a considerable build-up of sludge and deposits. Mobil 1 will help clean the engine as you drive, but it will have to work much harder in a very “dirty” engine, and so it is best to change the oil more frequently for those first few thousand miles. After that, you can rest assured that Mobil 1 is continuing to keep your engine running clean and well lubricated for mile after mile

I went from dino to Mobil 1 at 2500 miles and never looked back. Only down side is the motor takes much longer to warm up in colder weather.

I an going that way when I change it this spring. My scooter just has 8,300 on it, and I want to run the best oil in it.

Thank you,

I found a dude in the town I work in who's a dealer of AMSOIL, $10 a qt.

I've been running Mobil1 since 2500 miles, switching to Amsoil after doing some research.....

I started with regular then went to synthetic and back to regular revtech. No problems after 16,000 miles. The reason I went back to regular revtech is I've got TP rocker boxes and had more top end noise with the synthetic. You'll be fine

i used dino to break in engine
switched to Mobil 1 after
When its hot syn holds up
All the plants I worked in we use syn in all our machinery gear boxes hold up to alot of abuse
See alot of distuction in 38 years of maintenance
do like syn lubricants
thats why we use it were i am responsible for their care
it costs more
that may be a problem for some
why else would you not use it
dont know of any racing that does not use it
maybe top fuel does not not sure
lots of them use Lucas with lots of other additives
there a differnt animal
Never seen a problem by using syn which ever brand you like there amm great
It works in air cooled engines
its neeeds it in them they take alot of abuse
just my 2 cents

:2thumbs:Good Post Earl

All the above post are good stuff Ray. Gas Man handles Amsoil, just sayin. I run straight weight syn in mine in the heat of the summer, oil pressure stays higher.

This is all great information. And like everyone on here I want to treat the dog as best I can, and now I feel good about making that change without screwing something up. I really appreciate everyone's input very much. I wrench everything around here and n my old days I learned to ask the more experienced than I. Keeps me from making bone head mistakes !

Thanks again everyone,
