Was told that this was possible but have only seen it done once and it was on a sportbike. Let me know what you find out.

Bourget started his first few years with car tires on the rear of his bikes. Understand cornering sucks because car tires aren't designed for leaning. There is a reason for using bike tires on bikes but don't let that hold you back. Invention is the mother of disaster. Be sure to wear your bicycle helmet.

bourget started the wide tire trend with car tires but of course they were also using flat top fenders with them as well.

A lot of people have done it. It is very big on the VTX 1800 bikes "cruisers " not sport bikes, and I am considering doing it on my bike to get some real time data on it. My friend is going to do it on his VTX1800 so I will get to check it out one way or the other.
Most people call it going to the "Darkside".
I will give you a few links to go and read on it. Just search Darkside on them if you need to.
Most comments I have heard is that it took a little to get use to the cornering.....
That is the first thing you hear about riding a Big Dog too. Take some getting use to cornering..

why would you want to do this? I think your cornering would be for sh*t and you'd wind up eating the pavement.

I have read through a lot of the post from where the VTX1800, 1300 and Goldwing riders are installed them and put many, many thousands of miles on them. They go through and document how air pressure plays a difference and so on. They all do the tail of the dragon and it has enough curves in it to weed this out if it did not work but they cruise on.
It kinda falls back to, not if you can run one cause you can, but if you want to run one. I am game. Perhaps I will pull my fenders off and go for that bobber or roadster look. I am sure they have done it for the cost savings and a longer lasting tire.
I am on 3 rear tires in 10K miles so I am game to see what the deal is.
I will post pics whenever I try it...

They even run Dyna Beads in them...Go Figure

You can find one thread on their forums labeled "Darkisde Only" which is everyone that has gone to a car tire or ct as they put it.

A jump from 200mm to 250 is going to be quite a change. I can see being able to ride a 200, but a 250 is going to be like riding on a block. After all, these bikes are the most fun in the twisties. Not to mention the fender not being shaped correctly.

I agree with what you are saying Vegas and you make mega sense on the fender not being shaped for it. I guess when I pull the rear fender off this winter to do all my bearings and stuff I may pop one on my rim just to see what happens. I am interested in seeing how it feels anyway. Perhaps my coworker will do his sometime soon and I will try it out on his and see.

Chucktx,
What size tire did you try and on what bike?

I say that if you find a car tire the right width for that 250 rim, the height profile (50 series, 40 series, 35 series) won't be right to fit under the fender, especially on the side corners of the tire, the fender wraps to close to our rounded tires.

Import bikes like the VTX1800 (my father has one and I researched the car tire thing for him) have a ton of fender clearance that our bikes do not have.

I would say that IF you find a 35 or 40 series 18" tire that will fit under that fender (which you won't) it WILL handle like dog shit... NO, it won't handle at all.

Here is a test, let ALL the air out of your rear tire so that the bike sits on the sidewalls... Now go test ride it, that is how it will handle!!! It will be like riding your bike now WITH NO tire on the rear of it!

Good luck and I can't wait to see how your venture pans out, just for the info!:2thumbs:

I think its cool ... no need spending $$$ on them cycle tires especially for the burnout crowd!! you can rip 3 or more car tires to one scoot tire!! or .. for them straight line riders .. smoke-em up!!

Great post Nomad2day.
Thanks for the info. Not saying I will do this. But it's cool to check out the mods. I checked out the links. Great info.
I Guess no one has done it on a chopper here then.
I totally agree the fender would not fit as is.
I would like to find out more about this.

Here is a Bourget chopper with the Car tire they install. Put them on a number of bikes....
Yes the fenders are shaped for them but I bet they don't handle like a flat tire as above...:D

Can someone tell me what would be the advantage of putting a car tire on a bike?

I can only imagine how the bike would handle.

It also looks like a piece of crap!
