Can't get bike to start

I am a new owner of a 01 Mastiff, my first Big bike. I am having problems getting the bike to start. I have a new batt, about a year old, it has a little black box that lays on top, also have one of those little chargers that plug into wall on it also. The bike will turn over only a couple times slowly then just make an electrical whining noise and won't turn over. So, when I put it on the charger it shows it is only half charged. When i charge it it only takes about 20 mins to reach full charge, so I try again and it only turns over a couple times slowly and then stops turnig and makes elec whining noise and won't turn over. Can anyone help me with this? Thanks in advance for your help.

First off it sounds like you need a new battery. A Harley AGM is a good bat for around $110/$120 bucks.

the biggest part of the problem is the fact that the 107" engine used in the '01 does not have compression releases and unfortunately has no provision for adding them. makes it hard on batteries.

Start with the battery. Take it out and have it load tested. Any automotive place can check it for you

Also check the cranking amps on the battery you have now. You need alot of cranking amps to start that thing since you have no compression releases.

still no start

Had batt checked, cleaned all connects, put back in bike-- and it wouldn't even turn over motor, it began clicking. Pulled off seat and pos cable was smokin hot, so was batt. Is this a broke wire, or starter issue or what. Really need to figure this out so I can ride. Hope someone can help. Thanks friends......

Check to see if the starter is clicking,whining, etc. It may be sticking. That is what I would check if it were mine. I have a 107 and it will strain a battery. I am changing my EHC out for the wire plus I got from Jake,(Low Down Chop Shop), My battery looks like the original and I am going to replace it in the process while everything is apart leaving nothing to chance.

the little black box on top of the battery is the replacement/ upgrade for the starter relay. your first place to look is the load testing of the battery, you cannot eliminate the battery as the problem until you load test it. then your problem could be in the electrical connections or it could be the starter itself. the fact that the battery and cable are hot is due to electrical drain on the battery, extremely high amp draw. this would lead me to suspect either an electrical connection or the starter. the starter could have finally crapped out.the motor does require a lot to start it. try this, remove the spark plugs and see if it will crank. i suspect the starter.
