can you start

I need to check a tranny problem to isolate the dredded noise i have. can you start the bike without the primary attached. this way if the noise isnt present. then its my tranny. the noise is when the bike is sitting on stand or straight up, theres a marble sound, when leaning to the right no noise. friend on mine checked all of the clutch/primary and re-torc it. can you start it without the primary chain....

leave everything but take off the primary chain. will it hurt the motor with no friction against it

The motor turns over because the primary chain connects the clutch basket to the motor. No primary chain, motor no turn.

As noted chain has to be in place. If you're tough you might try old rope around the sprocket trick like a old Briggs and Stratton.

There is prob a tool for this that would allow you to spin the nut on the out put shaft but it would have to be designed so that when the engine starts it can over run the tool and not throw something up side your head. Kinda like ya see on Funny car engines or top fuel.
