Can it be true? Have we turned the corner?

So thanks to the folks who posted about the infamous paint saver/gas cap problems, my old girl (2000 Vintage Sport) finally fell victim to that one this year... I got a part number from this site for a Landmark single saver/cap set and it will work. What's even better is that the plastic threading on the new cap can be transferred to the old cap so the caps will look original (the new caps don't look the same, Landmark stopped making the exact originals)- and though I have a split tank and they won't be left/right threaded per side anymore, Landmark only sells lefty loosey righty tighty ones now. I figure that's OK. I just have to order another set now to be able to fix both sides... please trust that no amount of vaseline or other grease or filing the threads down a little worked- but filing the threads down DID make the original caps useable for now.

But while doing that homework I decided to look into what folks are getting for 2000 Vintage Sports these days... it was a happy surprise. I was only able to find 4 ads- one was for a bike that had been all customized and repainted and had low miles but was going for only 5K. This is what I had come to believe for a few years now, keeping an eye out on things, that I would be able to get for it if I sold mine.

But woohoo! The other three were more close to original and were going for 15K to 17K!!! They had a little less miles than mine but at least I had the foresight to order both seat types, all three quick release sissy bar options plus the luggage rack, the windshield and saddle bags. I did cut the original windshield down some, but I bet I could get close to original plastic if that was important to a buyer. I also got all the silly t-shirts and buck knife and tool roll and all the other stuff they sold to go with this year/model- the Vintage Sport might be the most flexible accessories model that Big Dog ever put out, not sure of that statement though... if I'm wrong on that, forgive.

Now the folks selling theirs for the asked for price might not get what they're asking for of course, but can now it be possible that our older dogs- is it possible- that if kept close to original (or all stock parts are kept available and in good condition), that our older dogs have actually "turned the corner" and are now finding a place with collectors looking for them that are willing to pay higher prices? I sure hope so. Maybe I'm just being optimistic again... maybe I need to work on that. :)

It might be a good topic of conversation here- if folks with older Big Dogs were to look up the "for sale" adverts for their year/make/model, have the prices for yours turned around from the horrible lows that we've seen in the last few years? Apparently it did for the 2000 Vintage Sport. Apparently...

Good to hear Vintage Dogs are getting the respect they deserve. But you're right about one thing, one's asking price doesn't necessarily translate to what they end up getting. However, the majority of Vintage Dogs I've seen prices average around $10K-$12K which is still very promising.
