I've lurked around and read alot of info on cam upgrades on the 117 before I upgraded to the SS 600 cam.
First off the engine is made for this cam. The performance is awesome over the comp cam that it replaced, kinda like bolting on a turbo!
The down side is if I'm riding with a group I can never find the right speed/gear to ride comfortably, the power band is shifted up a bit where out belongs but that's where the trade off occurs.

If I'm running solo or with a small fast group I just can't get enough!

I might bump down to the 585 or find one of those woods cams everyone talks about.

Just a couple of points to ponder if your making the upgrade.

i'd cut the jugs to get closer to a zero deck height which will give you a more complete burn, plus the added compression would lower your 'power band'. IMO

Good info.on these points, this is why it is so easy to be a lurker here!

Another view for those not wanting to bump up the compression is to run run a smaller lift cam with a longer duration.

Of course now we might be looking at what might be considerd stock harley performance at this point.

On the other hand the 600 cam sounds so god good at idle that I now will able to cancel my viagra prescription. ;-)

The only thing i am having a problem with in this cold weather is cranking.
High Comp and 20 Degress just aint cuttin it.Can drive anywhere so far. Longest trip has been approx 700 miles:2thumbs:

its already got the red springs & rollers rockers, [S&S] heads:whoop:

we have basically the same build.

guess you mean .060 air bleed?

i have ported heads. cut jugs, shaved heads, psi carb, dyna2KI ign, 640 cam, jims rockers, tappet limiters.

odd thing about it is it cranks right over even in cold with no tender. i have to catch it quick when cold but it usually always starts .

willing to compare my garage build to any other. chopper 117 has a hillside motor that i want a piece of at ATCO!

anyone have any ideas why I can only get my compression to around 10.3:1 (estimated I believe) because if I try to increase my compression anymore by using thinner gaskets, shaving the heads or cylinders etc I get piston to head contact? I guess there is a possiblity I was getting piston to valve contact (I don;t think that's what was happening) but isn't it the same problem either way? Basically I can't reduce my stack height to get the compression you boys are getting, which means a 640 cam isn't really an option for me and I don't get nearly the best out of my woods cam

even if you do have zero deck height, you can shave the heads. just need to check valve to piston clearance. play around with some plumbers solder through the plug hole while rotating the motor and you can get some numbers. thinking .060 is minimum for growth but that would need confirmation.

Are the "red springs & rollers rockers stock in my bike from dealership? I also have a 07 K9 and am thinking about a a 585 cam upgrade next oil change. My new/used K9 is only at 1,400 miles.

I cut the bottoms of the jugs and fly cut the pistons for valve relief to get my compression up and haint had any problems starting but I did relay the starter off the EHC to prevent ezcessive current drain
