Cam work question

Hey guys, thinking of changing my cam in my 08 big dog k9 and wondering what else I need to change to make it work? I'm thinking of going with the 610 but am open to suggestions. I'm just looking for something to keep ahead of my buddies that just all jumped ship to the big dog side. I have the s&s dual runner intake on the bike as well. Thanks in advance.

You might want to pull your front cylinder top cover (easyest to do) and see what springs you have. If they are the single wound bee hive style they are rated for .585 max cam lift.
Also a set of time saver push rods is a nice upgrade.

that is a place to start. next will be decking, porting & polishing the heads, roller rockers, rocker limiters, AV gas, and the list goes on and on and on and on. :roll::roll::roll::roll::roll::cheers:

No sir thats just a start.
If you do go with the .600 cam, you would need to upgrade the springs, which to do propely will require removing the heads. Then when you have the heads off you might want to look into the head work as mentioned above.

You can go with a .585 cam and not mess with the heads. You can cut out your exsting pushrods, pull the from tappet block. Install the cam, check and set cam end play and reassmble with the time saver push rods.

Yea I thought about having my mechanic do that work just wasn't sure what the turn around time was on that kind of work. I'm not really mechanically inclined FYI.

It would be in your best interest to consult with an engine builder that knows what works best with what cams. John Sachs is a member on here who enjoys a good reputation and had done engine work for several members on here. Give him a call, he will answer you questions and point you in the right direction. There are many on here including myself who have changed cams, exhaust, carburetors, gears, ignition, and more. While all these mods are good, some may not be for depending on how you ride.

The bottom line is how much money do you have and how fast do you want to go. :D
