Cam Upgrade

Wanting to install a 600 S&S CAM. For those who have upgraded and did your own work, did you also replace:

Pinion Bushing
Cam Bushing
Cam Needle bushing?

Swaping out the cam looks straight forward, buy this step in the S&S motor manual has me thinking I can not do iy

CAM Bushing
1. Press the cam bushing out with a driver
2. Press in new bushing
3. Center punch and then drill a hole 0.281" deep with a #31 drill bit. Drive the new dowel pin in 0,020" below the bushing surface.


ALSO for the Pinion Bushing

step 4. Locate a position more than 0.125" from the oil hole. Center punch this point and use a drill to go 0.188 deep into the bushing. Then use the prss to bottom out the bushing and continue drilling to a total of 0.281"


Is this what a machine shop would do for me?? I think swapping out the cam is the easy past, but when I saw this, I was think it was a job for the local wrench.

Rhino, All you need are the proper tools which including good measurement tools. You can pickup a decent hydraulic press for under $500 if you don't have access to one. The S&S books is pretty much all you need -- I 've done this many many times on HD motors and as they say YOU CAN DO IT .. besides I bet you will do a better jobs than your typical shop. Nope, didn't do any of that in my 2005 and did it all myself. I took endplay measurements from the old to new cam and reshimmed it a bit. It just so happened I didn't have to have the old cam gear pressed off and put on the new cam because they both just happened to have the same gear on them!!! It worked out great, just grabbed a new seal and about 2 hours, taking my time, to get it right the first time.

If you have ever set up push rods in a SB shevy, It is about the same!

i know the JIM's cover comes with the bushing drilled and peened. on my S&S cover the bushings are just sitting in the recess. pretty sure there is a tolerance measurement on both bushings in the ssw+ manual.

Think about doing what you did. Only 8,000 miles om the dog so I would think that the bushings should be OK. ALso going from an S&S 520 to an S&S 600.
