ok...so can the cam timing be off even if the dots and marks are lined up? i know the crank turns twice to the cams one revolution...the reason i ask is while cam was out grand daughter may have turned the back wheel on bike...:bang:

Just set the timing mark to the pinion

The cam lobes will dictate comp or exhaust stroke

First, if you lined up the timing marks and assume they are correct, little darling wants your attention, so she needs to take over the wrenching. So say she spun it [who cares]... Eventually, if you know which direction she moved the wheel, you move the wheel in the opposite X's her spins, until the cam timing marks all dial back in.

Second scenario. Why spin all the dry parts. Start all over as per Marv. Make her line up the gears. Put the dowel in the square hole... Dare you go, sweetie.

Billy,
Pinion mark at 12:00 0clock.
Cam gear mark furthest to the right at 6:00 Oclock.
Breather gear mark should arrive in the 8:00 Oclock area.
ALWAYS check twice..........
