I to am going on a hunch but I am sure there are many here that have installed the .585 with your springs. The dealer that I bought my first Big D in 05 would install a .585 or .600 cam whichever you wanted. You have gone this far and the difference in the cams is .016 not a big difference. If you do decide not to go with the .585 look around at some other cams that might be desgined for torque and in the same range lift.

How about some feedback here peeps dudes bike is apart and in surgery:2thumbs:

I build 700+ Hp racing engines every day I just want to say this valve springs take a lot of abuse and over time weaken so why not do your self a favor and just get new valve springs that way you know they are good and it is cheap insurance to protect your engien from serious failure just my opinion but I see it ever day.
That's great advice, but it just wasn't what I had in mind for this project. The real purpose was to change out the rocker boxes and rocker arms. I just wanted to do a quick cam change that was within the limits of (what I thought) we're my current springs. I just don't want to get into removing the heads right now, too much time and money...

Many folks on this forum love their 585 cam and many have not changed their springs. Its the 600 cam that you would want to change the springs. I bought a 600 cam package that came with springs. I too have an 05 with the 569 cam in it. Our 05's also have small exhaust and intake valves compared to the later dogs. Doing a cam swap alone will not net us the same results as the later bikes.

I know lots of people love the 585 cam and I know about the valve size difference, but what I don't know is if anyone has put the 585 cam in with the CompCam springs used with a 569 cam...

That's what I was meaning by not changing out the springs. I have read on hear that as long as you stayed under the 600 cam size it was fine. I believe folks have even asked S&S about it as well and gotten similar answers. If it were mine I would not worry about the springs. How many miles are on the bike?

What does your valve wear pattern look like
For 21,000 miles, not bad at all. You can see where the roller is in contact, but when you slide your finger tip across the end of the valve, it's perfectly smooth, no groove at all.

Have you tried calling BDM? I called them with the frame number off of my '03 and they were still able to retrieve some info on the build, limited, but some. They may be able to tie your bike's project number to a particular run of parts that they were installing and ID the springs.

I'm really not questioning anyone's knowledge, I just want to understand. Forums can be frustrating when you get half answers. I'm an electrical engineer, you're not going to talk over my head! Please get technical.

I fully understand the side loading problem with TP rocker boxes and non-roller rocker arms, but with a roller tip rocker arm you are just not going to see a side load like you would with a non-roller tip. Being off center could cause problems, I'm just asking if anyone has actually seen it with their own eyes.

I thought I did tons of reading and research here and other places before I started this, and now it's obvious I missed a lot so I'm just trying learn as much as possible.

Just to finish the story for anyone else looking for information...

After discovering I had the wrong rocker boxes and not getting any clear answers about using a .585 cam with my valve springs, I decided to take a different path.

In order to change valve springs you have to remove the head, and if you remove the head you need to replace the bottom gasket on the jug. If I'm going to do all of the just to change valve springs, then I'm going to zero deck the heads with a bigger cam, and maybe even go to a 124 kit or something. So I decided to just hang on to the cam for now and see where it goes.

Since I had the wrong rocker boxes for an evo motor, I sold the on eBay along with the TP rocker arms (made good money too) and purchased new the correct twin cam rocker box kit. I also bought new shafts and the S&S rocker arms. Found really good deals on everything, maybe I will dig through my receipts and post some details.





I put everything back together with the stock cam and it came out great. Only thing not perfect is the cam cover gasket sticks out a tiny bit on top, so I need to get the one that doesn't do that next time I have it apart. Also put in new o rings on the push rod tubes.
