Cam cover removal

I am doing a new cam while the weather is cold and while I have time off from work. The manual tells you to use a puller to remove the cover but I dont have the style in the book.

Mine has a small cover that is easily removed by 2 screws. Under that is a 1/4-20 hole that might be mistaken for a jack screw hole. It isn't! (no, I didn't tear out the threads) I used a long piece of all-thread and made a slide hammer. Cover comes off with a few light taps and drains some oil so use something to catch that.

I decided to add this thread to keep one of our brothers from making a mistake. Cheers!

Exactly! Oh... and don't forget to back off the push rods before removing the cover! That would be bad!:2thumbs:

Are you going to pull a tappet block to check camshaft endplay? This is also a good time to install a set of time-saver style pudhrods!:D

I did just that and had to go get a thicker thrust washer and a bunch of gaskets. .015 is max end play and I had .018.

thought you can measure using a straight edge across the case.

Didn't know that! Would be a lot easier. What about final cover torque and the gasket would that affect the end play?

Final cover torque is criss cross pattern and 120 in/lbs. Also there are two bolts that are longer, they both go in the two highest cover holes.

got a jims cover here for a bud and it refers to the HD manual for end play. must have been looking at a TC manual when i read that cause i got a TC manual here and that says to use a straight edge after the cam plate is installed to check for end play.

so your right on with the feeler guage through the tappet block.
