Question, a member here is selling a Bike that I want to buy. He's in AR, and I'm in NY. How would you go about making this deal? Would you send 20K without seeing the Bike in person, or waiting for it to even be shipped to you???? A Bike can't be shipped COD can it??? What if it doesn't work when I get it and needs work put into it???? How do you trust someone so far away to give you a fair and good deal?

Any help will be welcome on this

I bought mine unseen from a dealer and it was a new left over. For sale buy owner tough call cause you always want to trust your fellow man but not in today's world. Just thinking out loud:

- Have a unbiased/reputable dealer in AR give it a once over
- Fly out to AR with check in hand give it your own once over and if likey rent a uhaul and bring it on back :D
- Have a couple other unbiased forum members in the AR area take a look @ the bike
- There may be some type of 3rd party transaction processor that would protect both you and the seller.
- Have him list it on ebay...not sure how much protection you have there if the product is no good.

Good Luck hope it works out for you!

i bought my ridgeback from OK sight unseen living in NY .... lots of photos and I had a good vibe when speaking with the seller .... it does require trust and the shipping wait is brutal .... I paid his bank directly for the note and paypaled the difference ... the banker shipped the title and lien release to me .... regarding running condition, you could ask for video of the bike running with todays newspaper .... in the end, the ridgeback was even better than I expected

Good advice toodie. Some shipping companies will perform the payment duties as well. However DO NOT USE KPL AUTO Transport will rip you off!
I like the fly down and look at it or drive down with a trailer rental and bring it back.

Also good advice moog5050. Unless there is a clear title you should just make the check payable to the lien holder and they will ship title.

I found my ridgeback on ebay in Las Vegas. Was gonna have it shipped but when my wife heard it was in Vegas...OH NO baby they might scratch your bike we need to take a trailer and go get it....so thats what WE did...there starts my decent into hell. Before i got 30 miles from home, turbo went out on my truck....oh also front 4 whell drive u joints. 2800.00 later i was on the road. My wife was like ..baby just think we could have been commin back with trailer and bike on and u joints go out and wreck the truck and total the bike. I hate people who look at the bright side of shit. we than are 80 miles from Vegas and the whell bearing in the trailer go out...lol...right in the middle of nowhere. I end up having to call a road side service truck to come put new bearings in my trailer axle. Finally we hit Vegas i go to look at the bike and it was the most beautiful thing i have ever seen. road it around the block handed him the cash and told him thanks for the bike i am headin back to Texas. It was 40 degrease with snow on the ground around vegas....there was no way i was gona try to ride it home...not my 1st chopper and a ridgeback to boot. Best decision my wife ever made was to go trailer it. Cause i was freakin out about sendin someone i never met 10k and hope and pray i didn't get screwed.

I'll give you my dos centavos. First of all, it's good that the bike belongs to a member, probably the longer they have been here the better. I have been here for almost two years and I have seen nothing but good things from members of this site.

First and foremost I would want to know if the owner has clear title, in hand. If the bank has the title it can sometimes be hassle (not saying it wouldn't be worth it just letting you know and be prepared). If so the is going to have to be somewhat a level of trust on both sides as well as some give and take to get the transaction complete. If the bank has the title, they usually won't release it until the loan is satisfied (almost never) and most buyers want the title at the same time they receive the bike and hand over the funds. That would be next to impossible if you are in NYC and the bike is in Arkansas. Just something to think about.

I would start by asking him to post detailed videos to youtube. I would want to see 360 degree video of the BDM in real time. I would want to see the bike start, idle, and driven up and down the street. I would want to see the VIN in the video. I would also request that the bike be taken to an independent mechanic that would change the oil and perform an inspection, after which I could discuss with him the condition of the bike. make sure you bounce the VIN off the mechanic to ensure your're talking about the same bike. If the seller is hesitant about the inspection, I would offer to pay for it if when (and if) I purchased the bike he agreed to knock off half of the price for the inspection.

Afterwards, I would weigh all of the information gathered and make a decision on whether or not to purchase the BDM. If I decided to purchase the bike, I would strongly consider taking the extra time, money, and effort to make the trip to get the bike in person. If not possible I would discuss with the seller a very detailed manner in which the transaction would take place. I would want to speak with the bank (if the title is being held) and ask how they would release the title.

Next I would contact shipping companies and vet the hell out of them. I would consider calling my insurance company and explaining the situation to them. The bike should be considered yours at the point of shipment and you should get it insured at which point the shipping company takes possesion of the BDM. Your insurance company may even be able to recommend a shipper. There are shippers out there who specialize in MC shipping and use pre-fab crates made just for MCs, I would definately use one of those.

As I stated earlier, I would discuss with the seller a detailed plan to complete the transaction. If I could not pick up the BDM in person, I would consider retaining an attorney to escrow the 20K until receipt of the bike and title is completely transferred. It probably wouldn't cost much more than a couple of hundred bucks and when you are dealing with 20K it is a very wise investment. You would have to negotiate the terms of the escrow and the release. I would think it would be extreme unfair to the seller to put any more stipulations on the release of the funds except verified delivery of the bike. Once delivery of the bike and receipt by buyer is verified, then the funds can be released.

I know this sounds like a hassle, but losing 20K is a hell of a lot bigger one.

This is just my opinion and others may see it totally different, as I said in the beginning this is just my "dos centavos"

I hope this helps. If I can help you further feel free to let me know, I'll give you my #.

Where in AZ is it ? And who is it?
I've talked with a BDB member Cadilac333 ( Ryan )he lives in Bullhead City Az.
if its close he might check it out for you.Send him a PM. He might know the guy.
I personally would find a bike closer and pick up myself also. There are alot of deals out there right now. Unless this is the bike you want and the price is right.

i bought my K9 almost 3 years ago from member SUPERFLY, (it was a killer deal btw!!!) he sent me a lotta pics and I sent him 500 bucks to seal the deal. Then I went to Orlando FL to check the bike personally, i paid the guy there and after i checked the bike and returned home with the title.
then Raywood helped me doing all the shipping stuff and sent it to El Paso TX.

must say, SUPERFLY is a well known member and I have no doubts about him. after all, the bike was better in person than in pics, if i remember it has 1400 miles :D !!!

Well it's not really the Bike I want, but the Dealer in NY wants 33K before tax for a 2009 Wolf. This bike is within the price I can afford. So it maybe this bike or no bike. I miss my K9 after it burnt, but I don't believe in buying the same bike twice. So now I want a Wolf or Ridgeback.

As a banker...yes I am, please refrain from laughing too loud, you may hurt yourself...I would stay away from wiring the funds. You really do not have any recourse. If you use a cashier's check, you can always redeposit the funds if the deal does not work out. (Obviously if you choose to do the transaction in person.) Just endorse the back and put "Not Used For Purposes Intended" underneath. This is usually better than traveling with $20K cash! I beleive Paypal has some guarantees but I am not sure if vehicles are excluded. Good Luck!

That's why I advised him to escrow, luckily my job provides me with an attorney and I asked him about it a few minutes ago, he said that was very possible to do with an attorney. Have you ever heard of a bank escrowing funds under similar circumstances?

I intended to mention this in my initial post but forgot. Rodney's Cycle, which is a BDM Dealership in Little Rock, I'm sure they would be happy to inpect the bike and then discuss the condition with you. I do business with them and they have always been very good to me.

I bought my bike sight unseen from a dealer 400 miles away. Sent him a deposit and he delivered the bike to my house and I gave him the balance. IMO for a private seller I would take him up on his offer to meet at a reasonable distance and see the bike in person.

I'm with you Luke. If you can't make the trip yourself find an attorney, money gets tied up in escrow until delivered and meets expectations set forth by both parties prior to the sale. IE Runs/Drives no visible damage/scratches, etc. Whatever I'm sure a lawyer will have the appropriate verbiage in this instance.

I only put a deposit on my bike sight unseen, and went to pick it up with the cash. It was only 250 Miles away. So before I handed them the check I looked it over. If you don't have that option...see below :2thumbs:

Also regarding a previous post the bike is in Arkansas not Arizona. I know there a lot of BDB'ers in Arkansas. Not sure whos real close to the Little Rock area but maybe someone will be willing to scoot down and have a unbiased look?

send someone from here to scout it out for you. The best and easiest thing to do. Hell they'll even test ride it for you if you want them to. It's what I would do. I myself would not do the sight unseen shit. But that's just me.

Good luck and I hope it pans out fo you.:2thumbs:
