Broken Frame!!!!!!!

It is only 3/8" at the edge on mine.

The plate is 5/8" thick at least that's the thickness on my 06. Probably cracked after bending in the brake press. Really not too dificult to fix if you know how to weld. Just grind off paint, bevel the edges for 100% pentration of the weld, and your good. The real hard part is going to be removing the swing arm, grinding the bevel, clamping and tacking the frame back in position. A bit tough if choose not to remove all the parts from the frame, but can be done.

My thoughts are I would replace it if possible and weld repair as a last resort. Possibly some cheap chinness metal. It can be welded and TIG welding would be best since heat can be kept as low as possible. Don't know the heat treating process on these frames and if there is some then any introduction of heat (welding) will affect the hardness. If you do decide to weld then be sure to take it to a good weld shop and be sure that after it is welded there is no stress risers left, (nicks, weld under cutting and such) it needs to be ground down smooth, edges beveled and such. Again for peace of mind I would just replace it if possible. My 2 cents worth!

It really should be welded in a jig to make sure the frame does not warp with the heat being applied.

You can weld it, but if it was mine I'd cut that whole side plate off, make or buy a new one, and weld that back in. Frame will need to be powder coated no matter how you do it. That side plate also bears a twisting/shear load, which is going to be worst case if you just weld it back together, plus if you dress the weld at all to make it look decent you're asking for trouble.

Good luck, this would be devastating. Just making sure, you weren’t cruising with a 300 pound chunky on the back while doing wheelies where you? If you have to cut the broken piece out, the company should at least test the strength to see if it was in tolerance. I feel for you. Please keep us posted.

BD made the swing arm and hardware in 05.
RT wouldn't honor mine because of that.

If your bolt isn't broke you might have a chance with them.
But you'd have to strip and ship to Canada

Agress with Moe, just cut it off and weld on a new one. Guess it's easier said then done with guys like me with many years of welding experience. Make sure you take it to someone that knows what there doing.

Well that cetainly explains why you can't keep you belt in line. Fuck wasting a bunch of money replacing your frame, that is a lot of expense and labor. A correctly done weld will be the strongest part of that piece of metal. Find yourself a reliable welder and you will be safely up and running alot quicker and cheaper. Glad you figured out what was causing that belt jump. :cheers:

Daytec offered my buddy the same thing, offered to fix it or replace it, no charge, but he had to get the frame to them and then get it powder coated afterwards. In the end he ended up going through his insurance co and a local dealership and it was a nightmare getting it all fixed. I think sending it to them is the right choice. Tearing down the bike is not hard at all and you'll learn a lot, I keep the bolts and small parts in ziploc bags labeled by assembly. (trans, primary, gas tank, etc.) If you get into a jam PM me.

Not sure how much ShovelHeadKicker charges for his Frames, but he may have one already powdercoated and boxed up and ready to ship to you. It will be much faster just not sure at what cost.

Then you can take your old frame and send it out get it fixed up and you'll have one for a future build or sell to recoup some cash :cheers:

I agree with others it would be well worth it to ship to rolling thunder and have it done the right way at . If you get it welded by a local your going to have to strip it to powder coat anways.

Tearing down is easy....putting it back together "correctly" is the more challenging part. I would also send it off to have them fix it if the funds are there. However if money was tight the bike would just sit in the garage till it could be fixed because the bike working is not going to put food on the table for me. Good luck
