Broke (hard) starter

I hooked up with Knotso yeasterday and we went riding up near Mt Rainer. After we got to our destination we had lunch then went back out to start heading back the way we came. I hit the starter and it goes click. I hit it again and it spins freely as if it wasn't connected to anything. Sure enough looks like the starter busted loose from the inner primary.

A half hour before we stopped we had stopped for gas and when I hit the starter we heard a loud grinding sound as if the starter wasn't engaging with the starter ring but on the second attempt it started.

Also, we attempted to push start the bike. What is it with these new bikes that prevents them from being push started?

Anyway, many thanks to Knotso for riding back home and getting his truck and trailer then driving me home. Probably a good 6 hours out of his way. So, I can't thank his enough. I owe you a big one Wade.

Well my bike is now out of warranty but I'm going to try and get Big Dog to fix it since I've had so many starters. I think this will be my fifth or sixth!
Well see,
Ray

Holy Shit Ray! you didn't hear a clunk or anything? it just broke like that? what kind of starter were you using? was it a standard OEM one or an aftermarket one?

Ray,
you ride hard, you break hard. I'm sure you'll get it squared away. After 55 thousand miles (estimate), what did you expect?

Yeah well, I've seen a lot of starters fail but this is the first I've seen one sheer off. Hopefully I can get BDM to cover it but if not then it's about a 5G bill I would think.
A guy sells 2.4 volt starters on Ebay but I think they are refurbished! I'm wondering what kind on damage has been done on the clutch side or inside the primary!
Don't think I going to mess with it till I get a response from BDM and hopefully that will be a positive one. :flag:

MAN!!! That looks like the back side of the inner primary.... YIKES! If BDM don't cover it... do we see a open primary or a used BDM in your future?

It's hard to see down in there but doesn't look like the inner primary broke just the starter casing. Although, you never know if the jackshaft or starter ring on the clutch is damaged till you remove the primary cover.

I will never go to an open primary! As I stated before the noise of one would drive me crazy. :spank: If I can't get BDM to cover it then I will have to pay for it out of pocket and that is what I will do. I love the bike and the styling and I have been able to put about 40,000 successful miles on it. You never say never but I think this will be my last bike I like it that much.

We'll see what happens,
Ray

What noise? the only sound mine has is the slight whine of the belt. If you buy a good unit they are very quiet. Mine has absolutely zero clutch chatter

Guess I meant 5C notes not G notes! :D

We tried push starting it and I ensured that I hit the run button first but no go. Have heard from others that this model can't be push started but don't know why. I couldn't get it to fire and I made sure I had everything lined up properly.

Definitely looks like a weak material in the starter cases. Hopefully I will be able to get BDM to pick up the tab.

Will keep you all posted,
Ray

Man... that starter is so jacked up... geez... it just amazes me. Was it a aftermarket starter or a BDM?

I'm going to start doing steroids and 10 sets of squats-20 reps everyday...after about say 2 months I'll be able to handle a kickstart on this 117 you think?

I have been in contact with BD and they want me to take it to the dealer and have them submit a good will claim. Hope it gets approved. Can't get an appointment till next Wednesday at the dealer. Only one in this state!
Will let everyone know once I hear back from them.

I hope Big Dog comes through for you.
That doesn't look like normal wear & tear...

I occasionally had to push start my 04 Mastiff...
What a bitch that was......
Hit run and 2nd. gear with some hefty thugs pushing me:angry:

Headed to the dealer this morning. Wish me luck. Hopefully BDM will warranty my starter and I will also try getting a new speedo. Warranty recently ran out but think BDM will cover due to reoccurring issues.

Later,
Ray
