What the hell is up??? I have 24,500 miles on my 07 K9 and I am geting ready to put my third clutch cable on. The first one broke at around 9000 miles at the clutch lever. The second one broke down by the cluch rod. Both ends have broken off each cable, they have never broke in the middle yet. Has anyone else had this problem with the cables and is there maybe something I am doing wrong? I keep the cables lubricated and adjusted frequently:confused:

my first one broke at 7200. I'm now at almost 15k. I think I'm on borrowed time

When did your second one break?

My second one broke at 24,500. I called Barnett and they said there is a bigger cable I can use but it is not coated on the inside like the one we use now and there might be some drag on it, but they say it should last longer. They want to know if I want to try that one and to also send mine in and they will repair the broken one. What do you guys think, should I try the thicker cable or stay with the one I already use?

By the way excellent customer service, I sent them an email and it was no more than a hour and a half I got a response back!

So I emailed Barnett yesterday and I did not check my email until this morning and they actually responded to my email in less than 2 hrs. I am very impressed with their customer service. Here is what I sent to them and their reply:

Sorry to hear about your cable. It is rare to hear that a cable broke at the top. However, The arm design on the Baker transmissions causes a lot of problems because it does not move very well and this can cause the cable to work harden and break. We have done all we can do to make a better cable, except we can replace the wire with a bigger diameter wire, I believe the one you have is coated so that pulls easier. If we chance it to a non coated wire you will feel more drag on your lever, how much I don't know. To answer your question, if the cable is in good shape, no abuse, then yes we will repair it. Just send it in with your personal information inside the box and let us know if you want the bigger wire.

I have an 2007 Big Dog K9 with only 24,500 miles on it. I have just broken my 2nd clutch cable on it. The first one broke at the lever and this one broke by the transmission. Is there any kind of warranty on your cables? I keep them lubed and adjusted frequently but I have never gone through this many cables before. Any suggestions on how to make these last longer

I think i will try the bigger cable. i just got the exact cable replacement in today but I think I will let Barnett give me the upgraded cable and be the test dummy for the group and see how that one works.

Hey Dimentia

I had the same problem on my 06 K9
I got stranded twice in 10000 miles.
Got fed up, figured out how to convert to hydraulic with Custom Controls. No more cable, no more problems.
No it wasn't cheap. But riding without issues is worth it.
How did you do that? Any chance you have a How-To?

Broken Clutch Cable

WTF! Just broke my first one at OC Bike Week. At 6700k I would think this is common after reading about all the experiences everyone else had. My question is...

Is the Barnett better than the Bandit?

I think every ones question should be why in the hell are the Barnett cables braking? I think they are work hardening but why? Is the cable run fowling at the controls or is it too much tension or what? It's no fun to limp a ride home non-stop.
I ride a Yamaha Road Star with risers and I have had two failures right at the feral at the hand control. Each cable didn't even make it a whole season here in N.KY. I just now busted the second and I'm thinking it must be the run to the handle where the cable is working like bend snapping a coat hanger; back and forth until ya break it. so I'm replacing the hand set and making damn sure every thing is sliky smooth and straight B4 I chance breaking a third cable.
What the hell is going on with these cables!? It is a $@#$%# up thing to happen on a bike! I'll let ya know how it works out in a few after they are installed. Oh yea, the Barnett people did take care of the first cable for me I paid shipping no problems. Nice service.

Barnett Cable Mod

I'm sure most every ones' cables are breaking similarly, right at the swag. I have had two break here! If you look carefully at the areas of the barrel, directly above and below the exit for the swagged cable, you will see that there is wear from the control handle -looks like a little darker path on the barrels metal then the rest of the finish.
I was only able to retrieve one of the barrels from my bike, so my thoughts on the matter are narrowed, but supported by the cable guy I talked to at Barnetts. He was familiar with the tell tale signs on the barrel.
In my experience as a aircraft mechanic this wear is caused by a galling condition between the barrel and the control handle. The metals difference between the barrel and the control handle causes friction, not allowing the barrel to swivel inside the control handle which otherwise allows the inner cable to remained aligned with the outer cable jacket.
The number of miles you have on your bike will make little difference because it's the constant use of the shift control handle that eventually work hardens the cable when the barrel will not swivel inside the handle. In other words a non-stop trip of 6000m. I will only use my shift control handle about 12 times, where if your starting, slowing stopping more frequently, your going to use it more often; say 1200 times in a season back and forth to work and play.
Barnett's cable mod uses a hard plastic sleeve that slips over the barrel before the cable is swagged. The sleeve acts as a bearing which allows the barrel to move more freely in the handle there by keep the inner cable aligned with the outer. The assembly looks identical to the old installation except for a dark gray outer sleeve.
Theoretically if this works as a better bearing surface, then all the problems are solved for Barnett and us. I received the cable after repair in quick time, and the people at Barnett were pleasant enough; of course I'm already out almost half the cost in a new cable in shipping costs.
I'm giving them credit for taking it serious and finding a fix for this cable breaking. But I swear if it happens again I will be beyond pissed. This cable I just installed is the third one, so I guess you could say, I've had two out of three break so far.
So far so good. I'll let ya know.

well the problem is that a lot of us don't have a trailer with us on long trips.
I like to travel light and these damn cables are not very small

With a lot of these breaking at under 7k thats not very long to last
