Brand Bigots

Had to share - or vent either way. I also am a member of the VRod forum and don't post very much, but do use the technical - how to's on the site. Anyway someone posted they had a chance to buy a used pitbull (I think) and wanted to know if anyone on the VRod site had a BigDog. There were the usual "it's crap" from people who don't have one. I answered yes I had a BigDog and was honest about what you're getting into with a "custom" bike. I also said my BigDog kicks ass and I love it. Most VRodders don't have much tolerence for other what they call "Old Harley Style Bikes". Much different crowd than on this site where people respect other bikers no matter what you ride. That's the main reason I don't comment much on the VRod site since they consider the VRod a Porsche anyway. Well Porsche did design the engine in tandem with Harley. I feel more at home here, better people and truly more grounded in reality. Oh it's also surprising how many VRodders are first time riders, damn not the best choice to learn to ride on. Most BigDog riders have been riding for 20+ years or more 30 for me. Anyway ride safe and be good stewards of our brand and unlike the VRod crowd that trashes other bikes I love my VRod as well just a different bike for a different reason.

Good post and I hope that the V-Rod and BD you are able to enjoy fully. NOt sure of the V-Rod forum, but it does reflect a generalization of how many riders get snobbish to the extream when they get a bike, normally their first one.

I think when they do, they miss the point of two wheels in the first place. It is not the brand or what the clothing may say, it is the feeling of the road, the adventures and the sharing with other like minded folks.

I love my Big Dog, as well as my Buell and even the wife Honda. Loved pretty much any bike I have from a HD to Kaws to Gas Gas. I do not need to trash another man or woman ride for if they are on two wheels and getting the pleasure that I do, they are tops in my book.

Found many that become snobbish and downgrade other ride to the extream, are missing the point or showing their lack of real understanding. Not to pick on HD, but they have many many that quickly fall within such sterotypes, usuall after they get their ride, many for their first ride. Hell many of them get snobbish within their own brand, such as the classic when someone pulls up on sporty and you hear the full blown HD clone start saying "why did you buy a gril bike". I wonder how many of such would say that to many rider 40 years ago!!!

Seems like it is easy for anyone to get a new bike, buy everytype of logo clothing in the store, get on a forum with others and before long make a few open houses and 50 mile poker runs and then become a guru with their 1000 mile a year riding and gets attitute against some blok out there with their old beater sporty with the 40k on it, or the Goldwinger that has made 10 trips across country, the Dual Sport loaded down with bags and in need of wash after coming back from a 1000 mile weekend of riding on and off roads, or even the kid with his classic Vespa that is racking up a few hundred miles a week going back and forth to work.

As the saying goes $20,000 and 2 miles does not make one a biker! True no matter how many little funny stickers or patches sewned on their leather.

Everyone be safe and enjoy the freedom of the open road, regardless of what you are ride on to enjoy such freedom.

My first three bikes were English (Triumph), the next two were Metrics (Kawasakis, then Honda), and now I have my first American V-Twin. I feel like they all had their individual merits. I agree with Fibersnake. It all boils down to two wheels and the wind in your face.

I recently joined Jockey Journal as I was thinking of having a 68 Triumph bobber built.....never have I felt so unwelcome......if you don't own anything other than a shovel or earlier you are shunned.....rudely. I posted a few pics of my 84 kicker Softail and got blasted left and right over my "new" harley.....no thanks for me.....glad I bought my Ridgeback ( should have seen the reaction on JJ to that bike and the 300 rear tire.....un-real) and they can kiss my...

Yup, the cold shoulder I get from HD riders when I pull up in my k9 is dumbfounding. I figure it just shows their insecurities. Hard to find a mature HD rider from my experience. Usually the ones that have been riding 20+ years are much more accepting. But here in Arkansas there are always some stupid rednecks. (Sorry, but true) Too many are just into the HD clothes and weekend riders. I try to start a conversation and go from there..

I don't do patches and I don't cross the country on anything other than a plane, but I do know that until you get to the point that you just want to ride and not really have a destination one does not really get it.

I like all bikes, except Hondas, but that has nothing to do with their bikes. I just don't like the Honda company.

I came from a yamaha v-star 650. It was always funny when people came up saying, "nice Harley".

I moved up to a roadstar when I fell in love with their midnight scheme. That was the most expensive set of jets I have ever seen. It was almost the perfect bike except it didn't have a 6th gear and the stator did not keep up with my needs. So I went the HD route. I have never felt so alienated in a group of people.

They call it HOG because I saw them as owners not riders. If they would have been riders the would understand the we are all brothers better, but instead they pounce (in general) on anything not like theirs.

Whatever.

I am happy I have found a place I can listen, lurk, help....whatever that does not care that I don't have "X" brand bike and understands that we all share the road dodging cagers and other animals.

I must admit that I have seen some guys on here bashing Hondas and it has made me sad because it is very unwelcoming to those folks that ride them.

Mostly this forum is very welcoming...look at me...my bike is a Harley!

I go out to events and ask a guy what he rides and you'd be surprised how many are embarassed to say! That always breaks my heart! I always try to make them feel good and tell them it's ok and we don't need any brand snobs!

It doesnt matter what you ride, what matters is that you do ride. Who gives a crap what it is, I dont.. Im blessed to be able to ride a Dog but if I wasnt I sure as heck wouldnt be ashamed to ride a Honda.. Anyone bashing anyone else for their ride is a douchebag in my book and a poser themself..

all I can say is we all have opinions..... everyones may differ.... dosent mean anyone is right or wrong... ride what you wish... I love my HDs & bdm... I know there are alot of other brands... & I'm sure someone will twist this around to something negative ... thats just my opinion.. I belong to other sites that dislike big dogs... who cares.. this is a big dog site...
