OK guys.... I have said I am not mechanically inclined but, I'm going to bite the bullet and try some maintenance myself. I'm inspired by you guys.

I am going to try something easy at first....brakes! At least I hope it's easy.
Is there a video I can watch for changing the REAR Brakes on my Big Dog Mutt '08 ? Are the only tools I'll need is a Flat head screw driver, Nut drivers, alan wrench and a caliper clamp ? Not sure.....:up:

P.S. I did go through the searching for information on this site.. but, was hoping for some step by step instructions or a video if it's out there...

Search youtube for videos on changing motorcycle brake pads. I would a brake bleeder like a Mity Vac or a reverse bleeder kit. Also have shop towels to wipe up any brake fluid spills and brake cleaner to clean the brake dust off the calipers.

Well, cool... after talking with you all here and a few friends around town, I'm ordering the Lyndall Z-Plus pads front and back and installing them. I appreciate the info about the shims, I wouldn't have known. What a great site this is! Love it!
Now I'm ready for the 4 day ride coming up...should be a blast!!!

Just wanted to put in a good word for Wild Steel Worx. I sent them my starter for rebuild/mod, and USPS dropped it, damged it badly, (of course it was MY fault, so the insurance wouldnt pay) and WSW hooked me up. It took a little while to source the replacement parts, but it came back to me in a good time, on quoted budget, and works like a dream now. Nothing but good feedback for them.

One more question... watching videos for replacing brake pads, it shows people using a screw driver to push back the pistons from the pads... friends here have said not to do this but to have a caliper clamp otherwise it will scratch the coating on the piston and it will leak from then on... what is the advice of this forum?

P.S. where does one find a motorcycle caliper clamp if I do have to use one of these? I've tried looking around for one..no luck.

I recently bought some Lyndall Gold Plus pads for Front and Rear from Mick. Good people. :2thumbs:

Well, I did my own brakes... never attempted any maintenance on my bike before. I let Big Dog do everything... one because it was under warranty and two, I was never mechanically inclined. Thanks to Mick and the guys on this site, I changed the brakes myself over the weekend. Very easy. I was surprised. I'll definitely be doing my car brakes from now on as well. Thanks to Mick getting me the Lyndall brakes and you all for the support and advice. What a great site this is!!! :2thumbs: :cheers:

Good job. A lot of the maintenance is scary until you try but knowing that you have a support group behind you helps.

Minzina. If you haven't gotten them done your welcome to bring it out here and well knock it out over a beer or two.
