Bolting on painted tins

Not quite certain what to do....

1) I was speaking to the guys who painted my tins and they made it very clear that I need to insert regular metal washers between the struts and fenders (front and rear). Now when removing the fenders I did NOT see them - nor is it mentioned in manual - How should I proceed?

2) Also, when mounting the GAS GAP (see pic below) which is a flat surface and has NO paint saver (just a metal bung welded into the tank and the cap screws on to it). There is a rubber like washer that will sit between the tank and gas cap. They recommend I use some clear silicone, any recommendations here?

Looking forward to your input, know there is quite some talent on the forum when it comes to painting and bolting on.

staffy when i painted my bike,i put plastic washers in between anything that was metal and the paint so it wouldnt crack or make marks..but then again they came from the factory without washers..i think it might just be a caution for the paint..ask them

Thanks - Yes that's the way it was explained to me was - it should be done so that the struts don't cut into the paint/bodywork. I thought the clear along with hardener should suffice and withstand an impression - confused. Also, Im thinking that with the washers in there one would be able to see gaps between strut and fender NOT good....confused again...

I aint no painter and i aint too smart.I would do it like it came from the factory no washers i have not heard of alot of people having problems with paint chips i said alot of people, if i remember someone had some peeling problems.Good Luck !!!

That, and there is not much tolorance between the struts front and rear to be adding washers. I know mine is tight. So if you do add washers, the added thickness will only imprint the washers deeper into the new paint.

At my shop in michigan, our painter told us if we didn't want permanant impressions in paint, then about a week-two weeks of cure time is needed.

I've seen some really thin washers made out of a paper-type material. Seen them at the hardware stores. I think those would provide the paint protection while being thin enough to not take up room or cause gaps. The ones I've seen are usually a dark red color.

LDO is on.........it dont matter if you wait 2 weeks or 4 weeks chances are high the paint will still move on you,paint manufacturers tell you 90 days for paint to CURE,but it really is soft for awhile especially when custom paint is involved then the thickness of the paint is usually doubled.....i repainted my bike and then put it together within a week or 2,i didnt use any gaskets and luckily nothin dug into nothin,i am sure the paint dudes were tryin to look out for your best interest by suggesting maybe some washers...its a smart move and i have done it several times before,,,just get the thin ones LDO suggested...

I wouldn't bolt anything onto a freshly painted surface for a few weeks to a month. While you're waiting, put the parts out in the sun on any and every day that weather permits. I won't ship parts out until they have sat for a week to help them cure, with sun days included. You're probably jonezin' to put everything on, but I would wait. Just to be safe! Being over-anxious isn't worth damaging your fresh paint. Parts look good BTW!

Thanks a ton for the feedback. I went and got myself some EXTRA THIN "AN" washers from Master Carr (they are a 20 min ride from me). They are about half the thickness of the regular AN washers - should work well.

This, after reading all the feedback which was in line with what the painter had to say.

Thanks a ton for that insight - but after the week, would you still use the washers? Basically that was exactly what he (Dean from Deano's Custom Paint) said. If you don't let the paint cure you will cut into it. Either way he STRONGLY recommended using washers - Spoke to him twice over regarding this and he was absolutely adament - basically the better safe than sorry saga. So guess I will do both - Wait a week (no way...can I hold back :lol: :lol: ) and use the washers.

Thanks Ed, Yes the tins will be here either Wed or Thu. Cannot wait, the pic's are really growing on me and think its all going to turn out great...Just finished putting on a all black carb from Bob at tripple X - will post that up in a few - all in all looking good.
