Bike cuts out at high rpm's

Hey pound! I recently installed a S&S 600 cam and the bike is running great, but when I "get on it", the bike cuts out when I reach high rpms. I've read on some threads where a rev limiter is mentioned. Is this like a govener? I have an '05 pitbull/117. If this is not related to the rev limiter, can the jets be changed out to reach higher rpms? If not, it's OK. I don't get on it to damn often, but it does happen. Just thought some of you might know why the dog cuts out at high rpms. I was too busy hanging on to tell you what the actual rpm was, but it was up there.

floating a valve? probably not it. Just thinking out loud.
Marc. Can you explain that? Is that from possibly a weak spring in the head? I have the red striped springs with the titanium caps. They are suppose to be able to handle a .600 cam. LIke I said, even if this is not something I can solve, it's not major.

Brad what do you call high rpm's. The rev limiter doesn't come in to 6000 rpm's how high you wanting to go.

Hey T Byrd, Like I said before, I was too busy hanging on to the handlebars to see what the rpms were. And also, it was high enough that if I don't get an answer to this thread, It's not something that I'll lose any sleep over. MOre of a curiosity question than a "fix it" type question. I shift by sound, not by the tach. I'm sure most do as well. I was at or clost to the peak of the rpm's when it cut out. I was just curious as to why it did it. "Fixing" this is not a major issue. But thanks for all your feedback just the same. From Mobsta's reply, sounds like the rev limiter is what causes this. I'm just not familiar with this function, but I suppose I am now.

Ride it again like you were and this time take a peek at the tach, take note of what gear you are in, and the speed you are going. I can tell ya at 125mph, you are no where near 6000rpm in 6th

Might need a gps to know the speed u r going

let us know what you discover.

Well, maybe I didn't give "good information" the first time. I was going through the gears and was more like 2nd and 3rd gears at high rpm. Damn sure wasn't 6th gear and high rpm's. I've hit 110 and that's about all I needed to see to know that dog will run. But I"m really just talking about lower gears at high rpm's. :whoop::cheers::whoop:

Insert title here...
Without knowing what "high RPM's" are or what your speed was at the time (and in what gear) it's almost impossible to give you a definite answer. According to the manual red LED's light on the tach ring when you get up in the rev limiter range. Try it one more time and see if you can catch those lights out of the corner of your eye while you're holding on for dear life...

If it was a jetting issue on the main jet, it would start to fall on it's face at about 4000 RPM.

Rev limiter about 6000.

Can someone explain to me what the rev limiter is, what is it a funtion of, the EHC? Where will I find information about it in my manual? The purpose would be somewhat obvious, it keeps you from blowing your motor up. Or maybe there's another purpose I'm just not aware of. When you change your EHC out with a WP module, do you still have a rev limiter function from the WP (assuming it is curruntly operated by the EHC). Thanks guys.:eek::cheers:

I have the same prolblem. the bike is stock except for V&H big radius pipes and D&M
spike air intake. The bike starts cutting out around 5000 rpms in third gear, feels very
similar to rev limiter. weather was perfect low 70's and no humidity. the bike has 3700
mi. and has been on the dyno, doesn't cut out there. I suspect it is either fuel or ignition
related. If anyone has suggestions on where to start i would appreciate it.

P.S. the bike is an 07 Mastiff with the 117 motor

Just FYI... It's not uncommon for the motor to rev quicker than the tach can display in the lower gears. I had this same issue in a supercharged mustang. I thought I was hitting the rev limiter at 5200 RPM but it turns out that the tach couldn't swing as fast as the motor could rev.

If this is the first time it has happened well it's probably because of the new cam and you gassin it a lil more. Assuming that the cam is kickin in faster, you are gettin to the magic number quicker. Could be something else but that's what I think.

Brad you don't have to give it a close look but if the tach is going into the red you are at 6000 rpm's.And that my friend will get you a rev limiter,. P.S. Brad if 110 is all you have seen then you have not hit the limiter past 4th. gear. And Maverick I would say your problem is gas and air mixture problems not reving to high.

I had my bike for the year with the stock cam and carb, maybe hit the rev limiter 10 times in the whole year. I switched to the xXx carb and 600 cam, hit the rev limiter ten times in the first week. The 600 cam will get you there quicker for sure.

I'm only hitting it in the lower gears (1st and 2nd)! Not about to hit 6000 rpms in 5th or 6th. I've got a few "wild hairs" but I'm no fool. Of course, that's debatable too! :D

I've noticed my 117 ridge back is doing the same thing 1,2,3 hits 3,000 rpms an acts like its hitting a rev limiter, I changed the plugs they looked ok, 4 through 6th runs fine, it's driving me nuts, please help, the motor is the same as it came except for the Vance n Hines big radius an some big sucker intake, the guy I got it from said all the work was done by a dealer.
