bike choking out

OK, just wanted to hear from the experts.
With my petcock in the regular on position my bike is choking out and cutting off just like it ran out of gas. Swing the petcock into the reserve position and it runs fine. My guess is flaking off liner is clogging the regular on petcock tube. What do ya'll think? :loony:

the reserve pulls from lower than the regular

siphon the gas out pull the petcock and check it out!

drain the tank, pull the petcock, and blow air through it if shit doesn't come out with the gas. or maybe stick a small strainer down through the fill hole and see if you catch any debris. the last option would certainly be the cheapest to start with.

Have you pulled the petcock and blown air through it? The reserve pulls from lower than the regular. Also, check your enrichment lever to make sure it's down.

Your float valve in the carb may also be the culprit. Are you getting any gas out of the overflow tube? But this doesn't add up with the petcock valve position unless the screen is partically pluged on the bottom restricting fuel flow. The carb float valve is what controls the fuel flow, the petcock is either on or off. I wonder if the tank cap vent is stopped up. You might try loosening or removing the cap to rule that out. Anyway just throwing some ideas out there.

ok down to business. I would start on the petcock first to ensure nothing is blocking. I dont think it is carb if it runs well while it is in reserve. Sounds like someting is blocking the main fuel tube.

thanks guys, yeah full tank of fuel, enrichment knob down, and it only does it on the regular on position, slide it to reserve and it runs fine, so I know it's not a venting or enrichener issue. I'll run the tank close to empty and pull out the petcock see whats clogging that regular on tube. I have noticed slight delamination of the liner where fuel flows in from the gas pump nozzle, probably a chunk of that shit. But for now I gotta full tank of gas I need to burn up. I LOVE FLORIDA. :up:

If you have my luck, your reserve hole will also stop up just as you are at the farthest point from any help.

Since you have to take the fuel hose off anyway to take the petcock off, I would just go ahead and take it off and drain the tank into a clean gas can using a short piece of temporary fuel line. That way you can see if the gas is coming out at all positions of the petcock. If you find out that it is the tank lining coming off then you need to use something to get all that old stuff out or it will just happen again. If you are able to get some small pieces of the lining out of the tank try some different solvents to see if they dissolve the pieces, then you will know what will work to clean the tank with. I would try Acetone first. After you get the old liner out (if needed) then you will need to reline the tank. if you google gas tank liner you should find some stuff to use, I think most of it is epoxy based. If you are not sure that the debris stopping the petcock is tank liner, put a magnet to it, it might just be rust from gas station pipes.
Hope you get her fixed, nothing is more irritating than being ready to ride and the scoot won't cooperate.

Okay sorry for the delay in a an update but this mysterious choking out is an unsolved issue and now a cold case file.

I ran most of the fuel out the old fashioned way, by riding it, then drained the remaining fuel into a gas can from the fuel line. I removed the petcock. I had forgotten that the screen filter encases both fuel tubes, well that was perfectly clean with no debris on it. I blew through both tubes reserve and regular "on", both were completely unrestricted. So...... I put it back together and filled with gas again and damn if the bike runs fine in either regular "on" or reserve setting. Who know's. So I have no real cause of the cut off before when I would switch the fuel control valve to regular "on" the bike would choke out like it was starving for fuel, then switch to reserve it would run fine. Now it runs fine in both positions and I never found anything to explain why it was having an issue. So long story done, the bike is running fine and I have no cause to report for the previous issue.

Are you positive it's not your cap vent? When mine was messed up I kept thinking it was the petcock too. Even drained the gas pulled it cleaned it ETC. It was so hit and miss it did it both when on and reserve. Finally did it while riding with Ray at Bike Week in 08, he had me loosen the cap and bang it was fixed!!!
Also I could go weeks ata time with no issues!!! Then Bam it would start again.

Yeah man it could very well been. But, I did blow through the center hole on the cap and it does allow air to go out the two little weep holes in the edge. Mine's a mini-spike from Jake. So I figured the vent wasn't an issue, but I will damn sure keep that in the back of my head incase it pulls that SH!t again. :2thumbs:
