Big Winter Build

agree about the pipe. RB are all about performance and pipe length plays a big part in that. Leave it alone would be my suggestion or you are defeating the purpose of buying that pipe.
Actually, I had discussed the pipe being made short from the begining and R&B stated that the length of the pipe doesn't matter. Quote "After the two pipes merge into one it doesn't matter, it might as well be in the atmosphere, all the work is already done."

Cutting the pipe with minimal chrome damage can easily be done with a high speed cutoff wheel. However you paid alot of money for the performance of an RB pipe, which cutting "x" inches will affect the torque and Hp. Better ask RB about this they are better equipped to answer tham most since they built it for your application. On the carb size, I also went with a 48mm Mikuni and have a little bigger motor than you, The bike runs fine but the big diiference was at wide open throttle. I found that a well tuned 45 Mikuni gave me better all aound performance (throttle response). Are you using a plate or injected NOS system?
Hmmm, about the 45mm, I was informed that the 48mm was recommended due to the head work I had done. Were you running your 45mm with head work or stock heads? Hard to believe 3mm can make a big difference. The NOS kit is a Holly dual fogger system, sprays in the manifold. Plate systems restrict airflow in my opinion.

I'm running a "130+-" motor with a lot of John Sachs upgrades :

The heads have been reworked with 2.250 Intake valves and plenty of porting + milled a little bit for some compression.
love the bathtub design sachs did.

where's the vent hole for the comp release?

here is a stock 4.125 bolt pattern head to compare

Toadstool, I run both the 45 & 48 depends on what my ride intentions are. The 45 is a little restrictive since I didn't have the Intake manifold cleaned up by John. I will say this, there is a noticeable difference in the Idle when the 45 in on, the motor sounds very crisp and seems to rev up quicker. The 48 makes the motor sound docile but after 2500 rpm I have had the rear wheel break loose in 3rd gear and not just a little but enough to have to steer out of the slide. If you are going to run WOT then yes the 48 is the one. I am not an expert on any of this stuff but do ride both on the road and at the dragstrip and to be honest I have not a setup that will let me have a nice Sat, or Sun ride with the wife and friends or race on Fri. night and be as fast as the Busa' or ZX14. Good luck on NOS I hope you had the Bottom end worked on because that will be you weakest link except for the trigger finger when you need to release the button and the adreneline says no.
Marv, the vent hole is just above the spark plug hole, these are not S&S heads with the relief in the center. I have the manual push type compression release.

Here it is. [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Atg49-xPik]YouTube - Big Dog engine build[/ame]

This bike is amazing. I want someone to watch me take off from a stop because I sware it feels like the front is off the ground. My only gripe is I run out of RPMs way too fast. I crack the throtle and its in the yellow. I cannot wait to get the thunderheart installed to top it all off. What is a good rev limit on the 117"s?

sounds familiar :2thumbs:

have my rev limiter set at 6500.

safe???

has jims rollers and limiters in the tappets.

build has about 25k and the heads are ready for springs and guides. not bad for a high comp build. IMO

Sounds good Toadstool...:2thumbs:
Mine does not lope so much as your sounds but crackles as it is rolling around....:D
Must be the cam profile in mine....
I have my rev limiter at 6400 at the moment but I do not have limiters in the tappets as Marv.
I understand what you mean about it getting in the upper band pretty quick but SH8KR point on the electric shift is a solid idea to me with the nos and all...
