Hey just got my first big dog on the way. I ve seen on here and heard from other people about getting a battery tender. I was just wondering whats the best battery tender to buy (make and model)? Also going to purchase a new battery. Whats a good strong long lasting battery to buy? Anything else electrical I need or should do? I have a 2008 k9. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Been using the tender from Madog (ValueTech) for two years.
It's on the bike 24/7 year round while not in use.
Works real well not that pricey.:2thumbs::hi::2thumbs:

Battery tender made by "Battery Tender" is what I would use. They work great and have a full warranty if something is to fail. I have had one for 7 or 8 yrs now and still going strong. Around $35 I believe.
Battery go with one that has a solid lead post, not the type with lead on top that uses a metal threaded block inside the lead. That thin lead post will tear out on you from vibration after time. Seen it many times. The best kind are the solid like a standard Harley battery has. "Deka" makes a great battery with the solid post and have not seen any problems with them failing.

I personally like the Braille battery. I have several Battery Tenders (Get them from Mad Dog) but I also like my Genius 1100.

Battery Tenders from Mad Dog. Never had a problem with Interstate batteries. Put a new one in every two years.

I've used Interstate and Deka. This last time I replaced my battery I went back with the Deka because the Interstate battery lead was stripping out like Bigdogtech01 mentioned. Bigdog's came from the factory with Deka batteries. What ever you use make sure it has at least 280cca. I would recommend at least 310cca's

My big dog tender went bad in 2 years I got a Schumacher at Walmart for 15.00 works great. Harley batteries are very good and last if you keep on a tender, one thing that will help is every time you park and plan on plugging in your tender kill the motor but leave the ignition and lights on and pop on the high beam for 3 or 4 minutes tune off then pug up the tender.

I also use the Harley batteries. And I always have it connected to my "Battery Tender Junior" when I'm not riding. Check your battery connections often to make sure they are tight.

Thanks for all the input and welcomes to the forum. So far I m very impressed with this site. There is a ton of great info through out this site and seems like a good group of people. Will definitely be coming to everyone here for anything else I need. As for the battery tender I ordered the battery tender plus from Battery Tender off amazon for 47:2thumbs: bucks had a lot of good reviews. Battery is looking like the Brallie B2015 series. Doing some research on here from passed post looks like everyone has nothing but good things to say about it. Price is a little higher compared to the Deka but found one for 152 bucks but seems to be worth the price. Still keeping the Deka in the back of my mind. Thanks again for all the help and taking time on the new comer really appreciate it.

When buying a battery charger, it's wise to read the amperage rate on the charger. For example, say we have a battery that reads 12v12a or a battery reading 12v14a. Note the amperage change.

How you now read the battery is to move the decimal point over one so now the amp reads 1.2a or 1.4a. So the formula reads, I charge the battery for 12 hours @ 1.2a. Here comes the problem choosing a charger. If say the tender is rated 1.2a, you install that onto a 1.4a battery, your amperage rate has dropped down to .2a. You'd want at least a charger that reads 1.5a, so this brings the 1.4 amp hour rated battery up to its full potential.

The next part is how to prep a new battery for service. If you read the instructions that comes with the battery, or I spoke to a Yuasa tech and he explained his company buys the competition's batteries, fills the battery and lets the acid soak into the plates for an hour or more; charges the battery to full capacity; drains the battery down to 1v and then charges the battery up to full; drains the battery two more times; then fully charge the battery one last time and is now ready for service.

I've done that procedure and it does create a stronger battery thru that chemical process. Google: 'Edison Battery' or youtube the same wording.

The last part is to use an electrical grease on the battery posts, nuts, bolts, and eyelets. I installed the battery without that step, found the ground cable corroded within a few years; caused a no-start condition until I found the cause; then started right back up when cleaned. If the cables are in bad shape or corroded; use a plastic cup; pour vinegar into the container; dip the cable posts into the vinegar; wait till the bubbles subside; use another container with fresh water; rinse; dry; coat with electrical grease as stated above.
