Took off the V&H shortshots, put on the 2 into 1 supertrapp.
gosh it Is quiet.

however heard a belt chirp when accelerating.
had about 3/4 inch @10 pounds. seemed to be tracking in the center of rear pulley.
Increased the tension to approx 3/8 inch @10 pounds .

Viola !!!! chirp gone ....
Now back to the loud V&H short shots....( I do love the loud pipes)

I used to tell my kids to turn off the radio, and listen to the car.(just for a few blocks)
Why they asked ??.
"So you can hear if maybe a wheel bearing grinding, or muffler is dragging."
So I practiced what I preached ...amazing .:2thumbs:

If your belt starts making noise again, it could be that your rear pulley is getting worn out. Does it look like this one? That's what happened to mine and I had SuperMax put their poly teeth on it.

Mine chirps, squeals and groans all the time and it has 4,800 miles on it so I can't believe it would be worn out unless they were crap to begin with. I now carry a bar of soap and at almost every stop soap it up. The tension is correct and it's aligned so the only thing I can come up with is the pulley is too narrow.

I think he means it may be rubbing on the sides...
that is why "alignment" is critical.
"soap is treating the effect , not the cause

:flag:
You get the prize! Totally correct. The pulley could be 1/16 too narrow so it is rubbing the sides all the time. Never had this problem with any of my other bikes.

I wonder if a man could jack it up , put it in gear running , and take a little off the side of the belt with crocus cloth or something??
( don't tell OSHA) we all go to jail.

just a shadetree thought

I had the same issue as DynoDave and went the Supermax route too. BD had and issue on some of the early 2000's years with the coating on the pulley and it wore away really fast. I bought my bike with 10K miles on it and the pulley was totally shot. Definitely worth a look and Supermax is the way to go.

So is the Harley pulley smaller or larger hub size? Only had to replace my Harley type pulley once at 170k.... awhile back. If smaller can it be machined out?

I just found this on Ebay:
PERFORMANCE MACHINE "MONACO" HARLEY PULLEY 65T 1-1/2" BELT PM SOFTAIL CHOPPER.

FITS NEARLY ALL YEARS WITH PERFORMANCE MACHINE HUB SPACERS(NOT INCLUDED).

USED PERFORMANCE MACHINE "MONACO" CHROME PULLEY. 65 TOOTH ACCEPTS 1-1/2" BELT. THE HUB BORE IS 2-1/2" BUT WITH A SPACER FROM PM(NOT INCLUDED) FITS 1984-1999 MODELS AND 2000-UP MODELS.

So this one should fit?
thanks

has anyone tried putting on an 1" belt instead of the 1 1/8" stock belt?
I too have the chirp on my 05 Chopper and use the soap (Dial) on both edges of belt but the chirp comes back especially if caught in the rain.
Bike does smell good while in the rain

That is a good idea if your pulley is still good. If not, then IF you can find an aftermarket pulley with a 2.5 hub bore and a 1 1/8 width. This is very confusing because some pulleys are listed at 2 1/4 others at 2 1/2, some at 2" for the hub bore.

I looked at a really nice pulley with a 2 1/4 hub bore but it didn't look like you could get another 1/4" out of the hub hole before you hit the mounting holes. Then I found that used one I posted and he says 2 1/2 inch hub bore. Also 65 tooth or 70 tooth? What is on our bikes now?

Maybe someone on here has done this and can enlighten us.... :loony: Maybe now one of the kids can help this "old fuck" out...

Hey buddy, I've tried everything including bacon grease. Nothing lasts more than 100 miles. I think a new pulley is in store but need to know the # of teeth on it. Hate to have to pull it to find out.

I have a buddy here in Fl who can get me one with a 2.5 hub bore but it has 70 teeth... and no offset. Anyone?
