belt pully not spaced properly?

I'm still trying to get to know my new (to me) 2003 Husky and noticed that belt drive is rubbing on the tire, so much that it wore quite a bit of the tires sidewall off. It looks like belt pully should be spaced further away from the tire.

any ideas?

yea, not looking so pretty right now. just did a long ride and the primary is spewing a bit too.. another thing to fix. i'll clean & polish it all when i get it apart

Just another thought. Like one of the guys suggested. What if the previous owner put a tire that was a little two wide on and ground the tire intensionally so it would fit? Some of the guys are doing that with the metzlers i think. What if there really isn't an issue is my point.

Your belt guard bracket looks bowed out so i think that's bent looking at the picture. I agree with the tire alignment, make sure both sides are even. Do you have a softail alignment tool or something similar?

How does the tire look as far as being centered in the fender.

the tire looks centered compared to the fender. from looking at the spacers it doesn't look like there's a whole lot of opportunity to screw up (at least on the left side) so it's probably alignment. the belt gaurd does seem to be bent though, i looked at it last night and the front of it lines up fine, so just bent at the rear.

i don't have an alignment tool but i found that you can make one pretty easy, didn't have the stuff to do it last night so i think i'll swipe a piece of straight wire from the shop here.

The OEM spacers with a 180 mm tire are 1 1/4" on the pulley side and 1/4" each for the 2 on the brake side, actually .002 over 1/4" for the brake side (.027). On a 2002 Husky there was only about 3/16" clearance between the tire and belt when the wheel was
aligned correctly. Get or make a measuring tool so you can get the wheel centered off
of the pivot bolts to the center of the axel.

thanks, i checked the alignment last night and it's about a 1/16" off. not so far off and shorter on the left side which seems like it would pull the tire away from the belt. I guess next step is to pull the wheel off, measure the spacers and check for anything else that might be screwed up

happened to me, pivot bolt had snapped causing mis alignment. not sure if yours is a rigid.

it's a softail, if the pivot bolt was broken wouldn't it be obvious by handling like shit or hearing weird noises? thanks for the tip, i'll check it too
