In 05 I went to a belt drive primary using a 600hp BDL unit with support plate. Awesome---till the clutch basket bearing started going south. BDL replaced the basket but it did it again.
So, I went to the Rivera Primo Brute IV without a support plate and it held my 175hp just fine. Until lately, 3-4000 miles later and it's started to make a noise. An ugly metalic noise!!!
Pulled the clutch pack out and the splines on the discs are worn badly, plates are fine. I think that this is something I will have to put up with due to the pounding that they take from the HP. Remember, Harley design engines fire both plugs on one revolution and exhaust on the next. This causes strain on driveline parts that are not cushioned by rubber dampeners in the rear wheel hub or a crank compensator.
My next step will be to check the clutch hub bearing to see if it needs replacing.
Having all that HP is fun but creates additional repair costs. Is it worth it?-----of course it is. Belt drives worth it?---the jury is still out on that one.
