BDM Starter Rebuild (Bearing/Seals)

Well my 05 chopper starter finally died (23K mi). It was a remanufatured one and didn't have the leak problem. Had it rebuilt by Spyke for $180 two weeks ago and it is puking oil through the jack shaft and out the starter. I talked with Spyke to see what seals/bearings they put in...they have to get back to me. I found the old bdm number for the gasket/bearing kit that fixed the problem but can't find anyone that has one in stock. p/n 173-000005-00. BDM performance said it is an obsolete part. (I actually got someone on the phone at the website).

Anyone have a lead on where I can get the gasket/bearing kit or a work around for the oil entering the starter. I've read many of the posts here from way back that pertain to my starter. Kit looks like the only way to really fix it.

Thanks for any help.

Also called Full House and they sold their last one a few months ago.

Good luck on this one! I have an 06 K-9 also with starter issues.
I've checked with quite a few people and have not had any luck with the seal.
For what its worth, one starter has the jackshaft seal and still leaked a significant amout of oil throughout the starter. My second starter(new) did not have the seal and leaked enough to drain out the bottom of the starter.

Look for a EBay seller "jasonmotoelectrix" he's in Joplin MO if he didn't get blown away. He had 23 of them last I saw. You could PM REMorris he found them on EBay and ask him if bs ever bought one. I'd post the link but I was just watching it and it's a few months old so it probably wouldn't get you there. May do a google search on Moto-Electrix out of Joplin MO also. Good luck. come back and let us know how this turned out for ya. I should probably buy a extra.

Oh ya they were $239.00 and were supposed to be brand new.

I have one of these on the way. Supposed to be better bearings and better seal. The starter is made by Accumax, don't know anything about them but I have rebuilt mine twice and I have put the re-man from shovelheadkicker on ebay. I have also installed the primary vent on my 05 and still have oil dripping from the starter. I have high hopes for this Accumax, good price and offers a 1 year warranty.

Here is a link, not recommending because I haven't tried yet.

Double check the starter housing. If Spyke changed it, some aftermarket housings have an extra hole in them, which will allow oil into the starter. You have to plug it with RTV.

I rebuilt my own last year. Filling in the drain holes and increasing the size of the o-rings that didn't seal cause they don't even make contact all the way around the pieces. Also loctited the bearing in cause it was spinning in the case. Works like a champ now. Here are a couple pictures of the two different models I have.
