FYI
I ordered a re-manufactured starter from BDP performance parts.
Cost $373.75
When I finally got the starter which looked like garbage...My mechanic told me that it wasn't needed..So I call BDM Performance and asked how to return it...
They told me there was a 25% restocking fee on a used re manufactured part!!!!! That's $93.44...:job:
HOLEY SHIT!!!!
And let me tell you..it looked like Shit..Beware

Not sure what engine you have, but All balls, Ultima thunderfires, are good starters that can be had at a 1/3 of that price.

I just wanta ride
I understand your fustration:bang: most auto manuf. and such will charge a restocking fee of at least 10-25%. You can get a rebuilt starter from ebay (shovelheadkicker) for about$150 with a 30 day warranty. I would keep it as a back up. Just sayin

I would have to agree with Mike. Keep it as a spare and in the long run you can always sell it. I try to keep a spare of everything on the bike at the house just for emergency purposes.

I think 25% restocking fee is out of control...10% is a fair price...
Bottom line.... my lesson was learned..

I never should of ordered the starter until I knew for sure that was the problem. I just jumped the gun ....and we all know what happens when we assume things! I just wanted to ride...

Guys I understand your heart is in the right place about keeping it as a back up.... And $374 for a used starter is pricey...
I can turn a wrench but I don't have the mechanical ability and knowledge as most of you.... I didn't want to dick around and order an after market part and wonder if it would fit.

I got to tell you all.....At this point I might as well have a second bike...!
Its broken more then she works...NO BS!!!!!

Sorry to VENT>>>

But look at ALL THESE PROBLEMS

2008 Mastiff, ONLY 3000 miles on her, I'm the second owner ...I just got NO faith is this bike

Two speedos DOA...Finally got a Dakota Digatal $$

Fork o-rings leaked...they were replaced $$$

The carburator was allways getting clogged rebuilt and re-jetted $$

Fuel filter installed $

Finally found out the tank liner flaking and fell apart...sent to fuel tank services to get re-lined $$$

ECH FRIED.....Got a wire-plus $$$

Now the bike just clicks when I try to start her ...
I thought it was battery or starter...

So I buy a Braille battery$
And a rebuilt Starter$$

At the shop I find out the primary or the engine is locked up and thats why the starter wont crank over the engine...click... click ...click..I almost fried that brand new battery!

This F-in bike is worse then the Hottest Chic I ever loved...

I knew she was playing me dirty...and I allways went BACK....! I was a sucker for PUNISHMENT!!!

I'm praying that a bolt came off in the primary and is stuck/wedged in the gears...and some how locked everything up...
Its at the shop ..and in a few Days I'll know!

FYI.... I don't beat on her.....smoke the tires... or red line her.

I understand your frustration, but it comes with the territory when you buy some else's problems. Think positive and soon you will have corrected everything the 1st owner fucked up and a new Bike to go with the money you saved by getting a used one :D. 3k for miles could be miss leading. If you go out and by a new speedo on E-Bay when you install it starts at zero. :loony::loony: Maybe the first owner ran the crap out of it, replaced the speedo. Just saying, cheer up man it's only money that you can't spend anywhere but here on earth :D

TRUE COLORS COLLISION
I have went through your same paiin also whereupon every weekend My shit was gettin fixed, back then I was fortunate and there was this place (maybe you have heard people talk of it) it was called BIG DOG MOTORCYCLES... and if stuff broke on your bike within a 2 year period they fixed it!!!!!!!!!!!!
During the course of one riding summer I had to have starter replaced 2 times, and it still didnt work properly,I bought a plunger for insurance.....
Also the EHC went up and replaced, the ignition, the ignition module, the voltage regulator,2 speedos and there was a coupla other things that escape my mind..And boy was I pissed, trips were postponed,I had to trailer the thing back and forth, the whole mindset of being scared to ride due to undependability sank in and the embarassment of all the money I spent on it only to have the only bike outta the group allways in the shop....however it took a few on here to kinda calm me down and play the cards I was dealt...Bottom line I was getting all the usual problems fixed and I wasnt absorbing the costs, and my bike was slowly but surely becoming dependable again.....my attitude got better, and I stoppped crying over spilt milk so to say.......beleive me I will be the first to tell you I havent drank the BDM Kool Aid they seem to serve round here at times,Buttttttttttttt my attitude has changed, and I just get shit done now.....this too shall pass they say........:bang:

X2 Wow. And I just ran 510 miles each way to the ROT Rally in Austin Texas and only lost a lens cover (Bought new better fitting covers from Strokers)! Rode in the Parade to downtown Austin and didn't over heat (225 degrees max with no oil cooler). I don't know, maybe I just jinx myself but wtf!

I have had several of the same issues you are having buddy. Im currently dealing with the screaming fuel pump because I believe my tank liner failed. When I read the wonderful advice these guys are offering on this site it keeps me in the fight to make my bike better. You will win the fight if you dont give up!!!

I also discovered the restock fee that these guys are charging for parts they sell and in my opinion they will shoot themselves in the foot later when we are not buying parts from them unless it is a last option. I guess we can say it's a Doggie Dog world out here.

I'm sorry for your misfortune but glad you shared the experience you had on here because others now have a chance to not get taken for a ride. If I need a starter in the future I will look you up. Best of luck with your bike.

Guys thanks for the kind words.....I does some what ease the pain to hear your stories and problems.

I'm not giving up just yet....

And when ever I think things are bad in my life.....I always think to myself....some one....some where...... has it ten times worse then me!
Rock on and ride safe...

Back on topic a bit, did you contact customer service to complain about the condition of the starter? If you decided to bite the bullet and keep it, at least they can send you a clean/acceptable one. That's just messed up.

My recommendation would be to contact them, tell them you are unhappy with the condition of the part and that you are a Big Dog owner because of their reputation of taking care of their owners/customers. Keep it professional and respectful and you may get somewhere. If not, let us know and consider everyone warned. This isn't the way for a "new" business to start things off and I'd let them know that.

Can you post a picture of the starter you did receive?

Lastly, USE US!!!! If you want to know where to get a re-man starter, or tires, oil fluids, etc... ask! Lots and lots of experience and knowledge here from some damn fine wrenches.

Glad to see you are keeping a positive attitude.
