Sh*t howdy that one would have made ya scratch your head many times over and probably never found it with the issue being internal to the PDM. Glad to hear you called Dave at BDPP before going off troubleshooting.

When I first called BDPP they advised they did not have a Tech avaliable, however, after I ordered an igniton switch he hooked me up with Dave. He was very knowledgeable and helpful--simply great to work with! Almost as great as you guy's here. Now sit back and wait for it's return with my fingers crossed.
Thanks again to all. Hopefully the next time you here from me it will be good news.
Can't complain, still no snow in Iowa and forcasted to push 50 degrees tomorrow!! Al

Moesterman: Do all the early harnesses have this problem? I purchased mine last January, but had no reason to install it yet. Mine was purchased for an 07.

Good to hear that BDPP is going to get it taken care of. I knew that damn 2 amp fuse was soemwhere in the breakdown, just could not remember if it was the one to be removed or another one was. Sorry could not help you out better, but glad to hear that they will get you taken care and confirmed you were doing right and it was beyond something you did.

Keep us informed.

"Sorry could not help you out better" Who are you kidding! Everyone here was great....especially you. Thanks again and stay safe. Al

I wish I knew exactly because I was going to post it here. I have not been able to locate the receipt. I will look again and let you know for sure but I know it was right after Sturgis 2011. I ordered it some time after I returned because I ordered a clutch cable that broke while in Sturgis as well. Not sure how much help the date of purchase will actually be because who knows when the harness was actually fabricated because it was pulled from stock. At least I do not believe it was made to order because it arrived quickly. From what I understand the change they made was to add a 2amp fuse to the PDM for the ignition wire in the event the relay fails. In my case, it is believed the relay (R-1) was bad off the shelf that caused the "smoked ignition wire" as soon as I turned the key on. I was also advised this could occur anytime even while ridding so in that respect I was lucky. I believe if you have a 2amp fuse in your PDM you should be okay. If not, I think it would be a quick and advisable fix to add an in-line two amp fuse to your ignition wire. Much easier then pulling your PDM. I sent mine in because they had to fabricate a new harness lead as well. Not sure if this is any help to you but let me know if there is anything further. Al

Thanks for the info. I purchased one for my K-9 in Sept of 11, but have not opened the box yet. Will look for the inline 2 amp fuse.

Actually, you need to look at your PDM for the 2amp fuse upgrade. Depending upon your kit you may have a 2amp in-line fuse you may or may not utilize depending upon your speedo. This fuse is not for your ignition circuit. I was suggesting you add an in-line fuse to your ignition circuit if your PDM did not include the upgrade. I hope this makes scenes.

Another error I found a little confusing during install were the instruction, again, may be kit specific. My schematic does show the negative lead for the HCI with a yellow collar on the ring terminal. Actually, the lead with the yellow collar is the poss lead w/ 1/4" ring terminal that attaches to the fuse block. The neg is all black shrink tube with smaller ring terminal. Again, this my be kit specific so check it closely and by all means avoid accidentally connecting them both to the poss terminal. That would be the demise of your HCI. Al

Received the revised PDM today from BDPP. Plugged it in and everything seems to be working. Have to finish putting it together to to start and test everyting. I did install a Dakota Digital speedo which did light up but I did not see anyting from the tach. Does the tach sweep with the ignition or do I have to start it for any activity? I guess I will soon find out. Thanks agan from eveyone for your assistance. Al

Humm, I don't think my tach sweeps at all thinking about it.

To all that have been soooo helpful, I truly appreciate it. Especially Fibersnake who has spent allot of time trying to educate this old guy. With that said, I just spoke to Dave at BDPP who knew immediately what my problem is/was. That had a bad run of relays in the PDM so they incorporated a 2amp fuse to protect the "ignition wire". He indicated if faulty it will start at the ignition and burn towards the MH unless it fails as my did. In any case, also indicated my confusion with the connections on the HCI are from the conflict with the instructions. The schematic contradicted the instructions.

I have to pull my PDM and forward it to BDPP to have it modified and the new leads fabricated. He took the time to go over my install and it appears all was correct and it would have failed again as soon as I turned the key on. That would have been frustrating!!! I never would have figured this one out. In any case, I will get it back together and hope for the best and let ya know.

BTW, this problem is with the older harnesses, they have corrected the problem. I purchased mine some time ago and waited for winter here in Iowa to get-rrr-done.

Thanks again, AL
Do you happen to have a picture of what this upgrade looks like?
I bought my PDM in July 2011 and just installed today.
I've got a lot of issues
Thanks
