Best purchase??? battery tender or battery charger.. and if so are all the battery tenders the same or is there a better one on the market that will help turn over these big inch motors in cold N.C. weather..

Battery tender. Plug it in and leave it on when your not riding it. Warm or cold weather. Really extends the battery life and when your ready to ride the battery is always fully charged. I think I read somewhere, where a battery sitting idle can lose up to 2% of it's charge per day. I have 3 battery Tenders and their in use all the time.

Also I'm sold on the actual Battery Tender brand. Maybe cost a little more than the off brands but well worth the $$$ and they come with the ring connector/plug in harness you leave on the bike plus the plug in harness with alligator clips for other batterys.

I used a Tender on my 2001 Heritage from day one and I just traded it off 2 weekd ago. It still had the original battery in it. 6 years old.

Here's the one I use. Not sure if its the best out there are not, I have four of them on different things around here and have been using them for a couple of years with no problems.

The float charge mode is the key to a good one. Otherwise you cook the Battery.

I use several battery tenders from Harbor Freight. Use them on a car, tractor and the Mastiff for years and no problems. It don't charge the battery just maintains it. I know I'm a cheapy, but they work. Don't try to use it as a jump start.

Go with the battery tender. I have been told that not only will this save your battery, but it will save your starter too. Plug it in every chance you get. The stronger your battery the less strain on your starter. That's why bar hopping is so hard on your battery / starter.
