i know i should be riding alot more than i have don't forget i'm in upstate ny weather sucks up here but also been real busy. anyhow any idea why it smoked it?
Batteries have lead plates in them that are constantly corroding. A tender slows the process down with the low charge keeping the bubbles from settling around the plates hindering the break down process. (Or some shit like that). As the plates break down, they will actually touch each other and cause the battery cell to short out.
When you crank on the battery it will heat up the posts. Since you did not have enough "ass" to get the bike started from the battery due to a short in the battery, continued cranking burnt the post up.
You will want to check all of those wires and connectors before you put the new one in. The heat transfered to those as well and that can cause unforseen problems in the future. Make sure they are not brittle. The vibration of the bike will cause them to break sooner than later or get a bad connection and you will have intermittent problems that will piss you off. Been there done that shit.
