battery fried

hi i got a 2003 pitbull it hasn't been started in about a month. so i go to start it cranks over batterys a little weak then i see smoke. i take my seat off and my battery post is melted. any ideas what would cause this?

Do a search on batteries. Everyone has a preference.

I am running the Interstate 310cca. The same as Chopper Dave. I got mine from an Interstate dealer for $67 + tax. Bought the same battery from Big Dog of Columbus 2 years prior for $99.

Try to keep a tender on the battery to preserve the life.

What I am wondering is why the bike has to sit for a month or so in between starts. You gotta to let her out of her cage every now in again to keep her happy. :2thumbs:

Batteries have lead plates in them that are constantly corroding. A tender slows the process down with the low charge keeping the bubbles from settling around the plates hindering the break down process. (Or some shit like that). As the plates break down, they will actually touch each other and cause the battery cell to short out.

When you crank on the battery it will heat up the posts. Since you did not have enough "ass" to get the bike started from the battery due to a short in the battery, continued cranking burnt the post up.

You will want to check all of those wires and connectors before you put the new one in. The heat transfered to those as well and that can cause unforseen problems in the future. Make sure they are not brittle. The vibration of the bike will cause them to break sooner than later or get a bad connection and you will have intermittent problems that will piss you off. Been there done that shit.

I'm running HD softail batteries in all the BD's now. They beat the hell out of BD battery. Big Dog will be running interstate 310cca batteries in the 09 models. And make sure all your conections are tight. Even the other ends of your cables. The ground cable likes to come loose @ the starter.

Smoke is caused by heat. Heat (in an electrical circuit or connection) is caused by a bad or loose connection. The higher starting current is trying to continue across a bad connection. Check that first.
