Battery Failing...recommended battery for 2004 Pitbull

bike didn't start yesterday morning, so put battery on the charger for about 5 hours and worked great all day until last night when the bike failed to start. so apparently the battery isn't holding it's charge....so i'm assuming i need to replace it? think it's the original battery...bike is a 2004 w/only 2000 miles.

looks like there is an "interstate" brand battery in the bike now.

what do you guys recommend? what kind of battery are you running on our bikes?

When you put the new battery in make sure to slow charge up to full voltage. Also make sure system is charging properly.:2thumbs:

never heard of odyssey batteries....did you pick it up at autozone or order online? gonna see if any local retailers here carry it.

I got it on ebay It's a store in Florida it was 136.00 shipped if you go on ebay under american motorcycles they have a couple on there it was here in 2 days you could go to odyssey's website to find out about there products

Yep, that's the EXACT battery I have in the bike now. gonna try to jump start it to get the bike home, then throw it back on the battery charger. so you guys keep your bikes on a battery tender between uses? I never had to to that with my harleys....hmmmmm

yes we do(battery tender jr.) ...and as sul said....check your voltage regulator and your circuit breaker.....be careful when you are jump starting your bike.....that might pop the circuit breaker....

I went to the local harley shop and got one for mine. Cost about 95 bucks, but has been in over a year with no problems with battery. Not sure the number, but they will get you what you need. :up:

how do i check my voltage regulator and circuit breaker as suggested? guess i need some tools for that? kinda battery stupid when it comes to those areas because I have no experience dealing with this in the past. thanx guys.

Your EHC draws something like 1.5 mamps per day according to the manual.
Oh, your bike is not a Harley! :whoop:

I was having the same problem with a NEW battery! Changed out the VR yesterday (Dennis Kirk $62). That was what my problem was. A simple check of the vr is to check the voltage at the battery when the bike is running. If the VR is working you should see 14.4 volts. I was only see the curent charge of the battery when it was running, which means the battery is not being recharged. You could ride for a bout three days with out a battery tender, then the bike would not start. Hooking up to a battery tender kinda mask teh VR problem for me. I always do a VR test every now and then just to check the charging system. Another possile problem area of cource is the stator, which sends ac power to the VR. There are many chraging system test that are quite simple with a multimeter to help trouble shoot starting / charging problems.


I just went to SEARS and got a powersport diehard speced for a Harley softail. Want a 310 CCA however, Sears doesnt classify they powersport batteries by CCA only Amp Hour and this one is a 18.

To check the VR, set multimeter to DC volts and a seting that is atleast 20. Start bike. Red lead on positive of battery, and black lead on negative of battery, read DC volts.

My recomendation would be using any AGM battery rated at 270 cca or higher. The key to a good battery is proper battery maintance. Using a "smart charger" or a float tender is what maintains a proper battery. Don't think you can get by with letting a bike sit during the off season and then charge the battery before you are going to ride. The battery will sulfate during the down time. Keeping a battery on a float charger will eliminate sufation of the battery and keep it at full capacity. Putting a charger pigtail on the battery and just getting in a routine habit of hooking it up after riding will make a battery last for years (ask Raywood). Trying to source in a higher cca battery but not performing routine maintaince will accomplish nothing.

V I Always do the same as you, i charge slow to its fullest before i ever put a load on it, i also get the most CCA battery i can find for my application..Dave

:up: Aye! Very FIRST mod to my niner when it came home was to install a pigtail for the battery tender... Still have original battery in my '02 Softail, had dealer do a load test this Spring and it tested slightly better than some new batteries that have come through their shop.

Background noise: the owner's manual specifies the current draw, and states that the bike "may" not start if left unattended for 2 weeks. These things have a computer in'em...

Had a fren whose bike would start (or not) depending on the twist of the wrist on the ol' 10mm.

Batteries can definitely be Advanced Magic.

The battery in my 05 chopper recently started gasping. Replaced it with a selaed battery from HD. It was about 30 bucks cheaper than the big dog AGM sealed battery with the same cranking power. Same exact size in height, width and exact battery post placement.

couldn't find the interstate battery locally around here that I had in the bike...but found that the harley davidson AGM batteries work fine ...so just gonna head down to the local harley dealer today since it's very close...and pick one up. harley doesn't specify the CCA of their batteries though. got a tender yesterday to keep battery like new.
