Battery Drain/Change Harness?

Been playing hell trying to get my battery to charge high enough to start the K-9. I imagine its dead, - got it to 13 volts as soon as I turn the key it drops.

Now that BDM is defunct and parts are going to be hard to find - I am thinking about re-wiring to a simpler Harley harness. Will the battery still drain as bad? Even in the summer time I had to keep this thing on a tender. The dealer here said he can do it for $1300.00 it's a chunk of change, but am wondering if anyone still has battery drain with a different harness.

I'd just start with a new battery and a close inspection of all the connections related to your starting system, before throwing $1300 dollars at it. I don't understand the correlation between the harness and a dead battery your are finding. A fully charged "bad" battery won't ever work for you. There are tons of threads on here about batteries and charging, do a little reading, and you'll see it is reccomended to keep these bikes on a tender ALL THE TIME! Good luck with it.

Did you load check that battery? Just because it has 13 VDC on it doesn't mean it's good. Take the battery to the auto store and have it checked, it's free!

I have always wondered if a guy were to put a manual disconnect switch on the ground side of the battery and turn that off thereby disconnecting the battery from what ever the load on it is when the bike is shut off would the system loose some kind of memory?

Right, that's the thing - I have my Harley and don't need to have it on a tender all the time. I will go two weeks with out riding the HD and it starts. Cannot do that with the K9. Just wondering what is the culprit of the notorious drain.

You'd have to dig a little to find the answer on the site, I know there is a small milliamp level of draw while at rest, that is why alot of people ALAWYS have their bike on a tender while not riding. Most, me included, just installed an easy to access pig tail and plug it in whenever it is parked. If you are willing to research through the archives the draw amount has been discussed. A good relaible high CCA battery and a tender used religiously will usually help...and as a couple of folks mentioned your voltage regulator is a common killer. Good luck post fixes when you find them...helps everyone later. :2thumbs:
