Battery Charging

I picked up my first big dog yesterday, and the dealer says to always be charging the bike even when I'm not riding....I live in NJ, and the cold weather tends to drain more out of the battery...my question is, is it bad for the battery if I leave it charged 24/7 everyday. The dealer had said its a "smart battery" so it won't burn out the battery....is this true, and what do you normally do when it comes to charging your battery?

Get a "battery tender" it has a very low charge rate and it just maintains the battery at a full charge. Don't know about the "smart battery" thing.

RRRUFF is right on the money :up: yeah Sun Bill...get the battery tender jr. almost everyone here uses it. When I got my bike delivered in Feb. of 07...that was the first thing I bought for it. It also comes with a ring terminal lead that bolts right on your battery....so you don't even have to take your seat off. When I am not riding....I just plug it in....I keep my lead down between the primary and tranny...can't even see it unless you look down.
Deltran...the company who makes the battery tender jr. has excellent customer service.....here is my thread from last summer when my ring terminal got chewed up....it fell down from under the battery covers...thats why I run it down between the primary now..

Yeah, my bike came with a battery tender...there's a light on it, which flashes red or green. That's what I was referring to, is it bad to always have your bike plugged into this thing?

nope....when your battery is full charged....you will see solid green.....then it will just maintain your baterry so it stays charged....I keep mine on...even in the summer when I am not riding....

I bought a Yuasa battery tender for my bike. Unlike a trickle charger is does not continually give a charge. When the battery reaches 14.4 it goes into a "floating" mode and only begins again when the battery drops below the 14.4.

so the charger has a built in mechanism to stop charging once it hits a certain point.....that's the answer I was looking for, thanks.

yep.....then it maintains the charge...if the charge drops off...it will kick back on.....it says in the instructions how it works.....pretty cool:up:

I use my and never had any problems. When the battery is up, it goes green and shuts off the charge. As for the road trip, I haven't needed to use it if I ride it every day or so.

It's a "Float Charge" tat keeps it up. Wont hurt a thing actually make the battery last longer!!!:2thumbs:

On a road trip, the battery should be fine, since it is also being charged while riding. It is NOT riding the bike that causes battery issues, aspecially in cold climates.

When ever I am going to let mine sit for more than a couple of days, I hooker up. No problems on mine now for 2.3 years.

me too - as soon as the bike is back in the garage the first thing I do is plug it in - we have them on all our bikes

Your worrying too much, just get out and enjoy the ride. Your bike is under warranty for the next 2 years. Let the Wolfman deal with it!
