Interesting looking product, Tim !

I don't have one; but share your interest in a low/high voltage early warning system.

Also pondering where I would mount it for visibility when riding.

I saw one on a while back for about $138 that only lit up red when voltage was less than 13.5 volts or more than 14.5 volts (I'm not exactly sure about the numbers) What I did like about it was that the sensor/brain mounted at the battery and you could mount the LED anywhere.

but just today I bought one of these, it was a lot cheaper and does more.

I plan to make a bracket and mount it down by the key/coil cover.
It's supposed to auto dim at night. I hope it will work down by the coil, most electronics say to mount away (something like 3 feet) from the col.

HUGE price difference between those three.

I would have to question if this is going to help when a battery goes south and just doesn't have the CCAs it had when new. Voltage can drop out the bottom when there is a faulted battery, bad cell, or it decides to call Uncle. You can usually tell by being familiar with how a fresh strong battery starts your bike and then one day you notice a slightly sluggish startup. When that happens, it is best to get a load test done to check it's health.

What complicates this is when a Compression release doesn't always work right during a start.

It's for indicating ignition problems while you are riding, not much else. After stumbling on a topic on the Fury forum last night, I started researching for other solutions... found a few. It looks like this is an easy DIY project if you can solder and read a simple schematic.

I've found a few other things I want to look into which I'll do after my shift tonight.

You really want to make sure you can charge that phone, huh? :D

Also Not going to ask why your on a Fury Forum :rolleyes:

I do like the $26 mod cheap and everything you need. Just not sure where you could mount it without it being an eye sore. I can't tell how big that LED is mounting it in your coil cover on the ignition side might work?

That Kurkayn one looks like shit and whoever mounts it on their handlebars is a tool.... IMO

This is what I have, little pricey but good stuff

Where did you mount the dakota?

No, a "battery charging indicator" (which is just a volt meter) will not "load test" the battery and tell you if it has the same CCAs it used to have. Like you, I "load test" the battery with the starter button (which is why I also ordered a new battery yesterday).
But a volt meter/indicator WILL tell you several things.
It will tell you if you need to charge the battery before you even try to crank the scooter.
It will tell you if the battery is being charged at all.
It will tell you if the voltage regulator is bad and over charging.

I believe it is a worthwhile instrument to have, I just want one as small as possible. If I had seen the one in the first post I would have bought that one, and I still may.

I was thinking the same thing a few weeks ago. I bought this one last week. Believe it or not I got it in less then a week to NJ. Total cost around $17 and it seems to work fine. I just have to find a good mounting place. I was thinking in the hole in the tree where the cables and wires come through or on the the front air filter backing plate mounting bolt. Either one would be visible to me and not a normal person looking at the bike. After my regulator fire this spring maybe it would give me advanced notice of a problem.

Fuck yeah, I'm charging my cell! BUT, when we put the new battery in, I could tell there was a major difference in how faster the starter turned the motor over. I'm not sure how long this walmart battery will last so I want some warning when I'm riding.

Bikes are bikes, ya gotta look around to find some cool shit. :2thumbs:

I like the back of the air cleaner idea, or behind the coil cover.

I plan to make a bracket and mount it behind the coil cover so it is only visible from the drivers seat. If I can't make that work I'll mount it under the seat, just for diagnostic purposes.

Keep in mind guys I am a Dakota Dealer and can get anything they offer.
:2thumbs::2thumbs::2thumbs:I like that Dakota Digital but I just don't know where I would mount it?

Tim,

You have a battery from Wal-Mart? I think this is the first I have heard about a Wal-Mart battery on this forum!:roll::roll:

We won't be laughing long when we discover the Wal-mart battery lasts just as long as a Braille, HD, Etc. Although, it's tough to beat a Braille capable of putting out over 700 CCAs which could start two Dogs!
