baker 6 speed wont shift into 1st

recently bought this 2004 BD. Took it to the shop so they could go completely through it. Most checked out well, but the bike wont shift into 1st will shift into other gears just fine, but not 1st. I tried to adjust like what was stated on here but no success, mechanic also did all he could without opening the transmission. My question would be, is this a common problem if so what is usually the cause? Bought the 117 with 6 speed because I read it was a really good set up and heard from other BD owners it was a reliable set up. Just wondering what I might be looking at, thanks in advance for any help.

Will it not shift into 1st at all or just sometimes?

Not at all.

are the heim joints in line with each other? they should both be vertical within a couple degrees of each other. and make sure they are lubed.

yes I even did what was said on her and took the heim all the way loose and tried to shirt it into first manually and still could not get it into first, got it into 2nd and neutral fine, but still will not drop into first.

Damn mine is hard to get out of first until it warms up.I just take off in second for the first 20 minutes.It has done that since day One,only a bother when i forget and down shift all the way down.I hate looking like a dumbass pulling over to the side of the road trying to upshift.:lol::lol:

This is usually a symtom of a bent or misaligned fork shift inside the tranny.

the more I read the more I think it may be the fork shift, is this the same thing as the Y rod? If it is the fork shift how big of a fix is that? thanks

I was just thinking you may just need to index the shifter. Take the shift lever loose and see if you can shift it manually into first. The toe shifter has limited travel and if the shifter rod is not adjusted right you may have trouble shifting one way or another. Also an old problem was the heim joints binding not letting the shifter go back to a neutral position to make the next shift. Anyway hope its this simple and not the shifter pawl in the tranny.
