Bad noise eliminated.

I got this idea from someone on this forum and can't thank him enough. I had a bad noise in the bike sounding if a cover was loose but could not find it. Somebody, and I wish I could find the thread to find who, suggested to take a really hard grab of the fuel tank when it happened and sure sh!t....

Here is the new rubber mount for the fuel tank, the old one had been taped with electrical tape several times......

Yep,

Even though my Rubber is in good shape, I wrapped mine with two layers of electrical tape to protect it on eliminate Gas Tank vibrations.

I've been contemplating changing the tank mounts on mine. I don't have any noise, but sometimes between 2000-2500rpm my tanks looks like it's going to shake right off the bike. But if I grab the tank, and try to move it by hand there is no play in it.

Tom,

If the tank mount is in good shape when you inspect it, just add some tape. I believe all the shaking is what will eventually wear it out prematurely.

Is this a problem on all models and years?

I believe mine got torn due to it not being on correctly and snug and vibrated badly. Replaced and tightened the bolt and nut correctly and what a difference. Use thread lock!

Here is the deal. Junk rubber material. Decomposes fast. Shrinks = Loosens gas tanks.

Squid Move: Again, out come the tentacles with the tape over a hot engine's heat rising. So the tape becomes goo and the tape no longer stays tight around the shrunk old part.

DeSquid Move: Amazing Goop brand is now sent into action. You cut some old bicycle inner tube, smear the goop around so the new rubber has some memory, some shrinkage not about to happen too soon, plus, you can glue the tanks on if you want without boltsandshit.

Do not underestimate Goop. EVER!

Very good post Sven. I could actually understand you, and what you're saying is making perfect sense. However, replacing with a new mount still wins the squid contest.

The Electrical Tape I use does not become goo. That area doesn't get that much heat.:D
