Backfiring problem

Went for a quick ride this morning, didn’t let the bike “warm up” properly, quickly switched to second gear, the bike immediately started riding super-rough and back-firing like crazy.... (I thought I was low on fuel, which I’m not)...

Fast forward a couple hours, for back on the bike, to go fill up tank... let it warm up for a few mins... the bike died while running (going around the block) in 1st gear 3 times, continued backfiring every few seconds, riding super rough, wouldn’t start back up immediately after dying, speedo kept going back to “less than 0”, seemed like the lights on dash were all lighting up, and the “red light” came on a lot....

Thoughts?

I would not worry to much about the lights yet. If it is to low of a idle that might cause them to flash. Check plugs & wires first. In fact just get new plugs and while changing them test for spark.

Speedo and lights are just from it trying to die low rpm and etc....change the plugs i bet they r black as coal...like Rottweiler said check for spark but just about bet all is wrong is fouled plugs....

Check the carb for two black rubber caps. Sounds like they have either dry rotted or came off. Pick up some silicon caps from auto parts store and replace. I keep a few in tool roll. I've have had them pop off in the middle of nowheres....

Well was it the plugs?
Or the black rubber caps on the carb?

Ok.... absolutely no clue what happened.... here’s my guess....

I didn’t let the bike warm up properly (like I had been doing) and got on it and hammered the throttle.... I think the carb was struggling to keep up...

Let it sit for the last 12 days on a trickle charger while I was on vacation....

Fired it up today (not to ride) and it wasn’t backfiring... but the headlight was “flickering” whenever I gave it throttle...

Called a buddy, and we figured out one of the wires under the seat was basically hanging on by a thread and was barely connected to battery... redid the wiring, reconnected it, headlight issue is now fixed... let the bike properly warm up, rode it around the block.... no issues at all!

Thanks!!!

I had that happen on my 03 Mastiff and the spark plug wires were coming off at the coil.
